Lady Senators shut out Snead State in doubleheader

BOAZ, AL – Walters State's pitching staff got off to a strong start to open the season last weekend, and Tori Coffman and Ashley Milligan continued that trend on Saturday afternoon.

 

Taking on Snead State, Coffman and Milligan did not allow a run in 14 innings and struck out a combined 18 batters as the Lady Senators won 9-0 and 7-0.

 

With the wins, Walters State improved to 6-0 on the season. 

 

GAME ONE: Walters State 9, Snead State 0

 

In the opener on Saturday, Coffman (3-0) did her damage in the circle as she threw a complete game shutout.

 

In her seven innings of work, Coffman struck out 11 batters and allowed just two hits. Coffman has struck out 29 batters in three starts so far this season, allowing just nine hits in 16 innings. 

 

At the plate, Ava Brooks hit her first home run of the season while Brianna Beech had two doubles. Both drove in two runs, as did Sabrina Fox

 

The Lady Senators totaled 13 hits in the game and drew seven walks. 

 

The scoring started early as Kasey Bennett doubled home a run four batters in to make it 1-0. Halle Laramie was next up and doubled home Bennett to make it 2-0. 

 

The Lady Senators added two more runs in the second as Dye led off with a single before Brooks blasted a homer over the fence in center field. 

 

Continuing the two-run trend, the Lady Senators made it 6-0 in the third inning as Beech doubled in a run and, on a Dye bunt single, a bad throw scored Beech. 

 

Beech was at it again in the fourth inning as she doubled in Laramie to make it 7-0. Following a scoreless fifth, the final two runs for the Lady Senators came on a Fox single in the sixth with the bases loaded that scored two runs. 

 

GAME TWO: Walters State 7, Snead State 0

 

In game two, it was Milligan's turn to do her damage in the circle as she tossed a complete game shutout as well.

 

In her seven innings of work, Milligan (3-0) struck out seven and allowed just two hits. Through her three starts this season, Milligan has 23 strikeouts and has allowed just eight hits in 18 innings. 

 

At the plate, Jules Johnson hit her first home run as a Lady Senator. Johnson drove in three runs in the game while Kailey Dixon drove in two. Laramie had three hits while Brooks added two. 

 

Walters State got on the board quickly once again in game two as Johnson singled home Dixon three batters in. The Lady Senators made it 2-0 in the second as Brooks singled in Tatum Dye

 

Following a sacrifice fly by Beech in the third that made it 3-0, Dixon singled in Abigail Taylor in the fourth to make it 4-0. Two batters later, it was 6-0 as Johnson mashed a home run. The final run for Walters State came in the fifth on a Dixon sacrifice fly that scored Brooks.

Walters State will play their home opener on Friday, Feb. 10, as they take on Snead State for two games. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
