Lady Senators split final two games with No. 14 Volunteer State

GALLATIN, TN – No. 4 Walters State picked up a five-inning win in game one on Sunday afternoon against No. 14 Volunteer State, 9-1, before falling for the first time this season, 10-2, in game two. 

 

With the split, the Lady Senators moved to 35-1 on the season and 19-1 in TCCAA play.

 

GAME ONE: No. 4 Walters State 9, No. 14 Volunteer State 1 (5 Innings)

 

In game one, the Lady Senators scored five runs in the first inning and were off from there. 

 

Tori Coffman got the start in the circle for the Lady Senators and threw a complete game. Coffman allowed one run on one hit while striking out seven. Coffman improved to 19-0 on the season with a 0.76 ERA. She has 176 strikeouts in 101.1 innings pitched. 

 

At the plate, Kasey Bennett hit her sixth home run in five games. It was her 18th of the season. 

 

Along with Bennett, Tatum Dye had three hits and an RBI while Brianna Beech and Ava Brooks each knocked in two runs. 

 

It was a quick start for Walters State as they led 2-0 two batters into the game on a two-run shot by Bennett. The Lady Senators added three more runs in the inning on an error that scored Jules Johnson and a two-RBI double by Brooks.


Vol State picked up their only run, and hit, on a solo shot in the third, but Walters State put up four more runs in the fourth. Those runs came on a Dye RBI double, Beech two-RBI double and Laramie RBI single that made it 9-1. 

 

Coffman struck out one in the fourth and two in the fifth to end the game early.

 

GAME TWO: No. 14 Volunteer State 10, No. 4 Walters State 2 (5 Innings) 

 

In game two, the Lady Senators gave up five runs in the first and could not mount a comeback.

 

At the plate, the Lady Senators managed just three hits. Two of those were home runs by Dye and Beech. The other hit came from Olivia Harris

 

In the circle, Ashley Milligan got the start and lasted three innings. Milligan gave up seven runs, five earned, on six hits while striking out four. Abigayle Holt replaced Milligan in the fourth and pitched the final 1.1 innings, allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits. 

 

The Lady Senators runs in the game came on back-to-back homers to open up the second by Dye and Beech to cut a Vol State lead to 5-2.

Walters State will be back in action on Thursday for a doubleheader against Roane State. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
