Shorthanded Lady Senators split doubleheader with Cleveland State

CLEVELAND, TN – Down multiple starters, Walters State went on the road to take on Cleveland State Wednesday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader. The Lady Senators fell 10-0 in the first game but bounced back for a huge 13-3 win in game two. 

With the split, the Lady Senators move to 15-7 on the season and are 10-4 in conference play.  

CLEVELAND STATE 10, WALTERS STATE 0  

In game one, Walters State fell victim to an eight-run second inning and could never recover in a five-inning loss. 

At the plate, Walters State was led by Kasey Bennett, Hayley Parrott and Jenica Brown. They had all three hits for Walters State. Bennett also stole a base as well.  

Allison Chandler got the start in the circle for Walters State, lasting two innings while allowing nine runs on 11 hits. Sydney Johnson replaced Chandler in the third, throwing two innings and allowing just one run on four hits.  

WALTERS STATE 13, CLEVELAND STATE 3 

Walters State bounced back in a big way in game two as they totaled 13 runs on 13 hits. 

The Lady Senators were led by Bennett who went 3-3 with four RBIs and a home run. Along with Bennett, Jessica Campbell had three hits as well, including a triple, while Maggie Johnson also had three hits and two RBIs.  

The scoring started in the first when Bennett scored Campbell on a sacrifice fly. Cleveland State tied the game in the bottom of the inning, but the Lady Senators answered back in the second when Campbell drove home Chandler with a sacrifice fly and then Bennett cleared the bases with a two-run shot.  

In the fourth, the Lady Senators began pulling away. First, it was Brown scoring Campbell on a sacrifice fly. Then, Hanna Taylor singled in Chandler, Brown hit a sacrifice fly, Kaitlyn Harper doubled in a run and Johnson singled home a run.   

In the fifth, Walters State concluded the scoring when Bennett singled home Chandler and Parrott scored Campbell on a double play.  

In the circle, Chandler went the distance for Walters State. While she allowed 11 hits, Chandler limited the damage with just three runs, two earned.  

UP NEXT: 

Walters State will be back in action on Saturday, travelling to take on Roane State. The doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m.
