Walters State continues strong play, splits with Chattanooga State

MORRISTOWN, TN – If you had told Walters State coach Larry Sauceman heading into this past weekend that over the next four days he would take three out of four games against Chattanooga State, he would've taken it.

And take it he did.

After sweeping the Lady Tigers on Saturday, the Lady Senators came out at home on Tuesday and continued the momentum by taking the first game 10-7. While Walters State lost the second game 12-3, it was still a successful four game stretch for Sauceman's team.

"The first game was what it has been with them for the last three games, back-and forth," Sauceman said. "If you had asked me if I would've taken three of four, absolutely. To go down there and beat them twice was huge. They battled hard today. I can't be mad at them at all."

With the split, the Lady Senators move to 12-6 on the season and are 7-3 in conference play.

On the day, Kallyn Newport hit two home runs while Hayley Parrott hit a go-ahead grand slam in the sixth inning of game one.

Game one between the two teams was an instant classic as they battled to the end.

The Lady Senators were led in the game by Parrott with her four RBIs while Lauren Brickey drove home three runs. Parrott, Hanna Taylor, Newport and Kasey Bennett all had two hits.

After the Lady Tigers scored two runs to start, Brickey answered right back in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run home run. Both teams would then match each other with a run in the second before the Lady Senators took the lead in the third on a Newport home run.

Chatt State retook the lead in the fourth 5-4, but Walters State scored in the bottom half to make it 5-5. The Lady Tigers would not go away, however, and hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth to go up 7-5.

Down to their final couple of outs, the Lady Senators would not go away and Bennett made it 7-6 with a solo home run. Then, Parrott gave Walters State the lead for good with a huge grand slam.

"It was huge," Sauceman said. "That's the second home run she's hit off them, she hit one the other night against them that is huge. This team can hit the ball. We score runs no doubt about it."

In the circle, Brickey got the start and threw 3.1 innings, allowing five runs on six hits. Hannah Robinson replaced her and threw two innings before Allison Chandler picked up her first win of the year, throwing 1.2 scoreless and hitless innings to close the game out.

Hoping to take their fourth straight over the Lady Tigers, the Lady Senators struggled in the circle in game two and were run-ruled after five innings.

Chandler got the start in the circle and was solid for four innings before faltering in the fifth. Robinson replaced her and tried to calm the storm, but the duo gave up eight runs in the inning.

"It goes back to pitching," Sauceman said. "It was just the fifth inning there. We just couldn't get them out like we were getting them out. We just have to continue to work on that and get better."

At the plate, Walters State was led by Olivia Wheeler who actually made it a one-run game in the fourth when she mashed a ball over the fence for a two-run home run. Newport scored the other run for the Lady Senators with a home run of her own.

UP NEXT:

Walters State will be back in action on Saturday, taking on Cleveland State. That doubleheader is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.

"We just have to keep our heads up and learn from it," Sauceman said. "Our hitters need to work on their weaknesses a little. And our pitching just needs to give us a chance. We're going to be alright. Just have to keep it all going."
