Wheeler homers three times in sweep of Chattanooga State

CHATTANOOGA, TN – Walters State made huge strides on Saturday against Chattanooga State. 

Last time, the Tigers swept the Lady Senators. This time, it was the opposite. 

Walters State took Chatt State to extra innings in game one before coming out with a 4-3 win. Then, in game two, the Lady Senators out-hit Chattanooga State on their way to a 10-8 win. 

With the sweep, Walters State moves to 11-5 on the year and are 6-2 in conference play.  

Olivia Wheeler was the standout for the Lady Senators, homering three times on the day.  

WALTERS STATE 4, CHATTANOOGA STATE 3 

In game one, Walters State out-hit the Tigers 10-3 and finally broke through in the top of the ninth for an extra inning victory.  

At the plate, Walters State was led in the game by Wheeler. Wheeler had two hits in the game, both of them being home runs. Along with Wheeler, Kasey Bennett, Jessica Campbell and Sydney Dukes each had two hits.  

After Chatt State scored the first run of the ballgame, the Lady Senators answered back in the third when Bennett hit a home run over the fence in center. Then, Wheeler tied the game in the fourth with a home run to center. Chatt State retook the lead in the bottom of the inning 3-2, but Wheeler tied it back up in the sixth with a home run to right field.  

After multiple chances in extra innings, the Lady Senators finally broke through in the ninth when Dukes singled home Jessica Odom.  

In the circle, Hannah Robinson got the start but failed to record an out. Lauren Brickey replaced her and pitched all nine innings of the game, allowing two runs on three hits. Brickey is now 7-1 on the season after her impressive performance.  

WALTERS STATE 10, CHATTANOOGA STATE 8 

Game two saw both offenses explode, but it was Walters State who were more efficient as they scored 10 runs on 10 hits.  

Hayley Parrott, Wheeler and Hanna Taylor all led the way for the Lady Senators, each with a home run. Taylor knocked in three runs while Parrott and Wheeler scored two.  

Walters State got the scoring going in the first when Bennett scored on an error and continued it in the second when an Odom groundout scored Wheeler. 

In the fourth, it was Wheeler who tied the game with a two-run home run. The Lady Senators would take the lead in the fifth when Brickey singled home Bennett, and in the sixth added to it when Parrott hit a solo home run.  

Chattanooga State retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth with four runs, however, the Lady Senators answered back in the top half of the seventh with their backs against the wall.  

First, it was Parrott who singled home Kallyn Newport to make it 8-7. Then, Taylor gave the Lady Senators the lead, crushing the ball over the fence in left for a three-run home run.  

Brickey closed the game out in the seventh in the circle after Robinson pitched the first six innings, allowing eight runs on 14 hits.  

UP NEXT:  

Walters State will be back in action on Wednesday, taking on Chattanooga State again. The doubleheader is set to begin at 2 p.m.
