Lady Senators sweep doubleheader against Motlow State

TULLAHOMA, TN – Walters State showed off their new No. 6 ranking on Sunday afternoon against Motlow State with their ninth and 10th shutouts of the season. The Lady Senators won game one by a score of 7-0 and game two by a score of 17-0.

 

With the sweep, the Lady Senators improved to 16-0 on the season and 2-0 in TCCAA play. They have now outscored opponents on the season, 153-9.

 

The two wins also gave head coach Larry Sauceman his 1,000th career win. 

 

GAME ONE: No. 6 Walters State 7, Motlow State 0

 

Game one was the Tori Coffman show as she improved to 8-0 on the season with the shutout victory. 

 

In her six innings of work, Coffman struck out 15 while allowing two hits and walking one. Coffman now has 82 strikeouts on the season in 46 innings of work. Her ERA is 0.30.

 

At the plate, Brianna Beech had three hits while Haidyn Campbell drove in three runs. Kailey Dixon and Sarah King each drove in two runs. 

 

After three scoreless innings to start, the Lady Senators finally got on the board in the top of the fourth as King bunted into a fielder's choice that scored two runs. Two batters later, Dixon made it 3-0 with a bunt that scored Ava Brooks. Campbell increased the lead to 5-0 later in the inning with a two-RBI single. 

 

Following an RBI single by Campbell in the sixth that made it 6-0, the Lady Senators capped off the scoring in the seventh as Dixon singled in Beech. 

 

GAME TWO: No. 6 Walters State 17, Motlow State 0 (5 Innings)

 

In game two, the Lady Senators scored 11 in the third and six in the fourth as they cruised to the win. 

 

At the plate, Dixon led the way with four hits while Tatum Dye and Carley Cook each homered. Kasey Bennett drove in three runs while Beech, Abigail Taylor and King drove in two each. 

 

In the circle, Ashley Milligan got the start and threw three hitless innings. Milligan struck out five. 

 

Abigayle Holt replaced Milligan in the fourth and threw a scoreless inning before Adrienne Morrison closed it out in the fifth, striking out two. 

 

The third inning was a long one for the Lady Senators as they scored 11 runs to open up the scoring. Bennett got the scoring going with an RBI single and Jules Johnson made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly. RBI singles by Campbell and King made it 4-0 before Dye walked with the bases loaded to score Campbell. Taylor made it 7-0 with a two-RBI single before Bennett doubled two more in. The final scoring in the third came on a Beech single that drove in a pair and made it 11-0.

 

The Lady Senators finished the scoring off in the fourth with six more runs. King started it off with an RBI double before Dye launched a two-run homer over the fence. Pinch-hitting for Beech, Cook drove a two-run homer well over the fence in center to make it 17-0.

Walters State will be back in action for two more games against Motlow State on Monday. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. ET.
