Brickey shines but Lady Senators fall twice to Chattanooga State

CHATTANOOGA, TN – Walters State struggled in their opening conference series Sunday afternoon as Chattanooga State swept the Lady Senators. The Lady Tigers won game on 9-4 and game two 6-2.

With the losses, Walters State fell to 2-2 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.

Lauren Brickey led the Lady Senators in both contests, totaling three hits and two home runs. Brickey also pitched four innings in game one.

The Lady Senators got down early in game one on Sunday, giving up seven runs in the first two innings. While they did fight their way back into it, the deficit was too much to overcome.

Offensively, Walters State was led by Brickey with two hits and two RBIs while Jenica Brown drove home the other two runs.

Down 4-0 going to the top of the second, Brickey got the Lady Senators on the board with a single to left that drove home Olivia Wheeler. Walters State added two more runs in the inning when Brown doubled to left, scoring Brickey and Jessica Odom

However, Walters State would not score again until the sixth inning when Brickey laced a home run over the fence in right field that made it 8-4.

In the circle, Allison Chandler got the start and threw one inning, allowing seven runs on three hits while striking out two. Hannah Robinson replaced her and pitched a scoreless second inning, also striking out two, before Brickey pitched the remaining four innings, allowing one earned run on five hits.

In game two, it was Brickey again who got the Lady Senators on the board first in the top of the second inning, lacing her second home run of the day over the fence in right to give Walters State a 1-0 lead.

Chattanooga State answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, but Walters State responded in the top of the fifth with a Brickey sacrifice fly that scored Odom and made it 3-2. However, that would be as close as the Lady Senators would get.

Offensively, Brickey led Walters State with two RBI's. Jessica Campbell and Odom each had two hits as well. Walters State had eight hits in the game.

Robinson got the start for the Lady Senators in the circle and threw three innings, allowing three runs on two hits. Chandler replaced her in the fourth and finished the game out, allowing just one earned run on three hits while striking out three.

UP NEXT:
