Walters State falls twice to Chattanooga State

Walters State falls twice to Chattanooga State

MORRISTOWN, TN – Walters State struggled in the circle and at the plate on Thursday afternoon as they fell twice to Chattanooga State, 19-5 and 13-0.

With the sweep, Walters State falls to 15-11 on the season and are 10-8 in TCCAA play.

"We have to get back to where we were," Walters State softball coach Larry Sauceman said. "We've lost our pitching, and Chattanooga State was ready. When you give up that many hits and walks, you don't really stand a chance."

Game one saw Chattanooga State come out firing with three runs in the first inning, and the Lady Senators could never recover.

Walters State was led in the game at the plate by Sydney Dukes who had two hits and three RBIs. Olivia Wheeler knocked in the other two runs.

After the Lady Tigers broke out to a 7-0 lead, Walters State finally got on the board when Dukes singled home Kallyn Newport in the bottom of the third.

However, Chattanooga State responded with nine runs in the fourth to go up 16-1. In the bottom half of the inning, Walters State put up one last effort when Dukes doubled home Bennett and Newport and Wheeler singled in Lauren Brickey

Unfortunately for Walters State, the Lady Tigers added three runs in the top of the fifth and closed the game out in the bottom half of the inning.

Brickey got the start in the circle for Walters State but struggled as she threw three innings, allowing seven runs, six were earned, on five hits. Allison Chandler replaced Brickey in the fourth and threw just one inning, allowing nine runs on six hits. Sydney Johnson pitched the fifth inning, allowing three runs on four hits.

In the circle, Wheeler got the start and pitched the entire game, giving up 13 runs, however only five were earned, on 15 hits.

UP NEXT:

Walters State will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to Cleveland State for a huge doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.

"We just have to keep working to get back to where we were," Sauceman said. "We hit a little today in the first game but were so far behind we couldn't catch up. It's like we're starting all over again. We've just got to find it somewhere."
