Lady Senators seeded 15th in NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championships

Lady Senators seeded 15th in NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championships

LUBBOCK, Texas — The 16th-ranked Walters State Lady Senators, the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association and NJCAA Region VII and District G champions, will be the No. 15 seed at the NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championships held on March 18-23 at Lubbock Christian University's Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock, Texas, the NJCAA announced Monday morning.

The Lady Senators, coached by Hall of Fame member Dave Kragel, amassed a 28-4 record this season and will play one of the two unbeaten teams in the tournament when they tangle with No. 18 seed and 17th-ranked Miles (33-0) on Monday, March 18, at 2 p.m. Central. Miles is the District D champion out of Montana.

"We're excited to be going back to Lubbock and look forward to the challenge Miles brings," Kragel said. "I don't know anything about them right now, but to be 33-0, they must be pretty good. But when you get to the national tournament, every team will be really good. We're one of those 24 teams, and we're excited to get an opportunity to compete next week."

The two schools have never played, but there are familiar teams in the Lady Senators quadrant of the tournament, as the winner of the opening round game will face No. 2 seed and fifth-ranked District H champion Gulf Coast State (23-5), the 2016 and 2017 national champions, on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Central.

Also in the quadrant is No. 10 seed and third-ranked District E semifinalist South Plains (28-4) and No. 23 seed and unranked District C champion Harford (31-1), with those two playing in the opening round to see who faces No. 7 seed and second-ranked District F runner-up Seward County (30-3).

"Gulf Coast and Seward County are two teams I'm very familiar with," Kragel said. "We have played Gulf Coast several times in the last few years, ad we have played them at home, on the road, on neutral courts and at the national tournament. We have also played Seward County at the national tournament. We know what those programs bring to the table, but we have our work cut out for us with Miles first."

On the bottom side of Walters State's side of the bracket No. 14 seed and fourth-ranked District L semifinalist Trinity Valley (26-4), the national runner-up in 2018, will open against No. 19 seed and 20th-ranked District J champion South Georgia Tech (30-3), with the winner facing No. 3 seed and seventh-ranked District N champion Shelton State (29-3) in the second round.

No. 11 seed and 11th-ranked District H runner-up Northwest Florida State (24-5), coached by Walters State alum Bart Walker, will tangle with No. 22 seed and unranked District B champion Northeast Oklahoma College-Enid (28-3), with the winner taking on No. 6 seed and unranked District F champion Butler (27-4) in the second round.

On the opposite side of the bracket, No. 1 seed and top-ranked District P champion Wabash Valley (31-0) is the only other undefeated team in the tournament, and they await the winner of Monday's first game which pits No. 16 seed and 18th-ranked District A champion Cochise (28-3) against No. 17 seed and ninth-ranked Florida SouthWestern (29-3), a District F semifinalist.

No. 4 seed and 14th-ranked District L champion Angelina (30-3) awaits the opening round winner between No. 13 seed and eighth-ranked District F semifinalist Hutchinson (30-3) and No. 20 seed and 21st-ranked District I champion Western Nebraska (29-3).

No. 5 seed and 19th-ranked District E champion Odessa gets a bye and will face the winner between No. 12 seed and 12th-ranked District L runner-up Tyler (28-5) and No. 21 seed and unranked District M champion Salt Lake (25-5).

No. 8 seed and 10th-ranked District E runner-up New Mexico (26-5) will face the winner of No. 9 seed and 13th-ranked District D champion Jones County (27-2) and No. 24 seed and 22nd-ranked District K champion Three Rivers (27-3).

The eight at-large teams were Seward County (District F runner-up), New Mexico (District 2 runner-up), South Plains (District 2 semifinalist), Northwest Florida State (District H runner-up), Tyler (District L runner-up), Hutchinson (District F semifinalist), Trinity Valley (District L semifinalist) and Florida SouthWestern (District F semifinalist).

There were five ranked teams that did not make the field, including sixth-ranked and defending national champion Tallahassee, 15th-ranked Chipola, 23rd-ranked Wallace State, 24th-ranked Midland and 25th-ranked Hill.
