Lady Senators stay perfect in conference play; explode past Dyersburg State

MORRISTOWN, TN – Walters State led by 17 after one quarter on Saturday against Dyersburg State and were off from there on their way to an 85-32 victory.

 

With the win, Walters State improved to 15-3 overall and 10-0 in TCCAA play. 

 

"I thought we came out really strong to start the game and it carried over throughout," Walters State coach Jasmin Coleman said. "Our defense was really solid throughout. Tyasia (Reed) did a great job for us today. And Bri (Marshall) was solid off the bench, as were Rose Morrow and Asia Barr."

 

Tyasia Reed led the way for the Lady Senators with her second double-double of the season, totaling 20 points and 10 rebounds. 

 

Along with Reed, Briontanay Marshall had 14 points off the bench while Kailyn Farrell had 12 points and seven rebounds. Other contributors for the Lady Senators were Maiya Reed with nine points, five assists and three steals, Asia Barr with nine points, six rebounds and four assists, Matty Tanner with eight points, four rebounds and three assists, Rose Morrow with seven points and six assists and Izarria Alexander with six points. 

 

The Lady Senators shot 46.7% from the field and collected 38 rebounds to go along with 24 assists. Defensively, Walters State held Dyersburg to nine field goals and forced 23 turnovers. 

 

It was all Walters State to start as they scored 24 points in the first quarter and led 24-7. Farrell had six points in the quarter while Barr knocked down a three and had five points. 

 

In the second, it was more of the same from the Lady Senators as they scored 17 more and held Dyersburg to six, leading 41-13 at the break. Tyasia Reed hit three 3-pointers in the quarter while Maiya Reed, Farrell, Alexander and Marshall all scored. The Lady Senators held Dyersburg to just one made field goal in the quarter and four shots total. 

 

In the third, the Lady Senators built their lead to 65-26 as seven players scored for Walters State. Tyasia Reed had six points and was a perfect 3-3 from the field while Farrell and Marshall each had four. Morrow also knocked down a trey.

 

Marshall took things over for Walters State in the fourth with eight points as the Lady Senators cruised to the win. Reed and Tanner each knocked through three's in the final 10 minutes while the defense held Dyersburg to 1-13 from the field.

Walters State will be back in action Wednesday as they host Cleveland State. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
