Lady Senators win third straight; take down Cleveland State

CLEVELAND, TN – No. 22 Walters State got their second straight conference victory on the road Wednesday evening, taking the win over Cleveland State 51-44.

With the win, the Lady Senators improved to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in TCCAA play.

Walters State was led in the game by Kailyn Farrell with 16 points on 5-10 shooting. Along with Farrell, Tyasia Reed had 12 points and eight rebounds while Izarria Alexander had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Other scorers in the game were Rose Morrow with four, Maiya Reed with three and Asia Barr and Ciara Taylor with two each. Maiya Reed added six rebounds and three assists, as well.

It was a fast start for the Lady Senators as they got up 7-0 on five points from Farrell and two from Tyasia Reed. Cleveland State finally got on the board, but Walters State kept the foot on the gas and limited the Lady Cougars to six first quarter points.

The Lady Senators ended the quarter with a 3-pointer by Tyasia Reed and layups by Farrell and Alexander that made it 16-6 after one.

In the second quarter, neither team scored until the 6:57 mark when Barr laid one in. The lead was extended to 20-9 with a Maiya Reed layup, but Cleveland rallied off eight straight to make it a three-point game. Two free throws from Tyasia Reed at the end of the half made it 22-17.

The third quarter was more of the same as Cleveland got close, but the Lady Senators wouldn't let them get close enough. It was 29-24 before Farrell made a layup and a 3-pointer to get the lead to 10. It was 37-31 after three.

In the fourth quarter, Cleveland cut the lead to one with 4:16 to go at 40-39 before Tyasia Reed tipped a shot in. A layup got the lead back down to one, but Alexander made a free throw and then converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 1:25 to go to make it 46-41. From there, the Lady Senators were able to hold on for the victory.
