Farrell, Reed post double-doubles in Lady Senators win over Cleveland State

MORRISTOWN, TN – When No. 25 Walters State needed a bucket on Wednesday night, Kailyn Farrell and Tyasia Reed were there to provide one. 

 

Taking on Cleveland State, Farrell and Reed both posted double-doubles as the Lady Senators blew past the Lady Cougars, 79-47.

 

With the win, Walters State improved to 16-3 overall and 11-0 in TCCAA play. The win gives Walters State a three-game lead in the conference standings over second place Cleveland State.  

 

Farrell finished the game with 28 points and 13 rebounds, her sixth double-double of the season, while Reed had 18 points and 11 rebounds. It was her third double-double of the season. 

 

On the season, Farrell is averaging almost 15 points and eight rebounds per game while Reed is averaging 14 points and six rebounds per game. 

 

"Kailyn did a great job with the ball in her hands tonight, scoring at the rim," Walters State coach Jasmin Coleman said. "And Tyasia did a good job on the boards and getting us second chance opportunities with offensive rebounds. We did a good job defensively and were almost perfect from the free throw line which is huge." 

 

Along with those two, Rose Morrow came off the bench with 10 points, six rebounds and three assists. Other contributors for the Lady Senators were Maiya Reed with six points, four rebounds and three assists, Asia Barr with five points, Matty Tanner with four points, Izarria Alexander with four points, four rebounds and three assists, and Briontanay Marshall with four points. 

 

As a team, Walters State shot 46% from the field and were 14-15 from the free throw line. The Lady Senators collected 42 rebounds, 21 of them being offensive boards, and had 19 assists. 

 

Defensively, the Lady Senators held Cleveland State to 30% from the field and forced 14 turnovers. 

 

It was a quick start for the Lady Senators as they scored the first five points of the game and eventually built their lead to 18-11 after one. Farrell had six points in the opening quarter while Tyasia Reed grabbed four rebounds and hit a 3-pointer. 

 

In the second, Walters State began to dominate on the defensive end of the floor. Cleveland State got off just eight shots during the entire 10 minutes, making just two as Walters State held them to four points. The Lady Senators hit eight shots total in the quarter and led 35-15 at the break.

 

Farrell added eight more points in the second quarter on 4-4 shooting, and had five rebounds,  while Tyasia Reed hit another three and had seven points and four rebounds. 

 

In the third quarter, offense was the name of the game as the two teams combined for 43 points. Cleveland State outscored the Lady Senators by a point in the quarter, but Walters State still led, 56-37.

 

The fourth quarter was more of the same as Walters State piled on 23 points and held Cleveland State to 10. Farrell had eight in the quarter while Morrow made 3-of-4 shots and had seven points. In the final 10 minutes, the Lady Senators defense held Cleveland to 1-14 from the field.

 

Tyasia Reed named programs first ever NJCAA Player of the Week

 

Following a 46-point week, Tyasia Reed was named the NJCAA Player of the Week on Wednesday. It is the first time in program history that a Lady Senator has received the honor.

 

"It's a huge honor for Tyasia to be named NJCAA Player of the Week," Coleman said. "To have that be the first time in program history is huge. It couldn't happen to a better person. She has worked super hard for us, and we are very proud of her."

 

During the week, Tyasia Reed scored 14 points against Roane State. She followed it up against Jackson State, nearly completing a triple-double as she had 32 points, eight rebounds and seven steals.

 

Tyasia Reed is averaging 14 points and six rebounds per game on the season.

Walters State will be on the road on Saturday as they face Columbia State. Tip is set for 3 p.m. ET. 

 

In the two teams' first meeting, the Lady Senators took home a 78-47 victory.
