Lady Senators remain unbeaten in TCCAA play with win over Southwest Tennessee

MORRISTOWN, TN – Six players scored in double figures for Walters State on Saturday against Southwest Tennessee while the defense held the Lady Saluqis to under 35% from the field, as the Lady Senators cruised to an 88-40 victory.

With the win, Walters State improved to 8-2 on the season and are 5-0 in TCCAA play.

"Any conference win is a good win," Walters State coach Jasmin Coleman said. "Kailyn (Farrell) was big for us off the bench again today, as was Tyasia Reed. Maiya (Reed) and Izarria (Alexander) played a lot of minutes for us and did a good job."

Kailyn Farrell and Tyasia Reed were once again the leading scorers as Farrell had 23 points on 10-13 shooting while Tyasia Reed added 19 points and was 4-4 from 3-point range.

However, a lot of the points came thanks to the guard play for the Lady Senators as Maiya Reed, Izarria Alexander, Asia Barr and Rose Morrow all did a good job distributing the ball. Maiya Reed had seven assists while Alexander had eight and Morrow and Barr each three.

The Lady Senators assisted on 23 of the Lady Senators 33 made baskets.

"I thought we did a good job of getting the ball down low to our post players in good positions for baskets," Coleman said. "Especially in the fourth quarter, we did a good job of driving and getting the ball downlow or kicking it for a shot."

As far as scoring, Maiya Reed, Morrow and Alexander all had 10 points while Aminata Tal had her second straight double-digit scoring game with 12 points. Other scorers were Matty Tanner with three and Ciara Taylor with one.

As a team, Walters State was 33-63 from the field and had 27 rebounds. Farrell led the way on the glass with nine rebounds while Maiya Reed had five. Alexander also had an astonishing seven steals.

Things started off strong for the Lady Senators as Alexander and Morrow hit back-to-back 3-pointers. Southwest Tennessee scored after that but Morrow and Farrell answered with buckets to make it 10-2.

The lead grew to 16-2 a few minutes later as Tyasia Reed and Morrow knocked down 3-pointers. Maiya Reed made two free throws as she was fouled at the horn, and Walters State led 20-7 after one.

In the second, Morrow scored again to open things up before Southwest made a run to get the lead down to 22-15. Not deterred, the Lady Senators answered with a 3-point play by Farrell, two free throws by Maiya Reed and a layup by Farrell which made it 29-15.

Walters State would go on to score the final 11 points of the quarter as Tal scored, Maiya Reed scored, Farrell scored, Tyasia Reed hit a 3-pointer and Tal made a jumper. It was 46-20 at the half.

The third quarter was all Tyasia Reed, as she scored nine of the Lady Senators 19 points on 3-4 shooting. Tal added four more points while Farell had three. The lead was 65-30 after three.

In the fourth quarter, the passing display of Morrow and Alexander was on full display as they got Farrell easy looks. Farrell had 11 points in the quarter while Alexander added four. The Lady Senators scored 23 points in the final 10 minutes and held Southwest to just 10 points.
