Strong third quarter give Lady Senators win over Roane State

HARRIMAN, TN – No. 21 Walters State trailed by three at the half on Wednesday evening against Roane State but outscored the Lady Raiders 23-4 in the third quarter on their way to a 57-42 win. 

 

With the win, Walters State moved to 21-3 overall and 16-0 in TCCAA play. 

 

Tyasia Reed led the way for the Lady Senators with 16 points and five rebounds. Reed scored 10 points in the deciding third quarter. 

 

Along with Reed, Izarria Alexander had 11 points, five rebounds and five steals while Asia Barr had 11 points, six steals and four assists. Kailyn Farrell pitched in eight points and 12 rebounds. 

 

Other contributors for Walters State were Maiya Reed with four points and six assists, Rose Morrow with four points and four assists and Matty Tanner with three points. 

 

Defensively, the Lady Senators held Roane to 36% from the field and forced 22 turnovers. 

 

It was a slow start for both teams with 14 total points scored in the opening quarter. The Lady Senators scored nine of them, six coming from Alexander, and led 9-5 after one. 

 

In the second, the Lady Senators continued to struggle offensively while Roane State scored 16 points to take a 21-18 lead at the break.

 

However, it was the third quarter that changed the game as the Lady Senators scored the first 14 points to take a 32-21 lead. It was 41-25 heading to the fourth. Tyasia Reed had 10 points in the quarter while Barr had five and Farrell four. Walters State held Roane State to one made field goal. 

 

In the fourth, the Lady Senators gave up 17 points but scored 16 as they took home the win. Barr drained two 3-pointers in the final 10 minutes while Tyasia Reed had three.

Walters State will be back in action on Saturday as they host Jackson State on Sophomore Day. Tip is set for 2 p.m.
