Farrell scores 11 in fourth quarter; Lady Senators hold off St. Petersburg

PENSACOLA, FL – Kailyn Farrell has been a big presence for No. 21 Walters State down low this season and Friday night was no different. 

 

Taking on St. Petersburg, Farrell scored 11 of the Lady Senators 25 points in the fourth quarter as Walters State held off a late challenge to win 68-63.

 

With the win, Walters State improved to 6-1 on the season.

 

Farrell was the leading scorer for Walters State in the game with 21 points. Along with Farrell, Maiya Reed totaled 17 points while Izarria Alexander had 10.

 

Other scorers in the game for Walters State were Tyasia Reed and Matty Tanner with nine each and Asia Barr with two. 

 

The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair as the Lady Senators and St. Petersburg were tied at 14. Farrell, Tyasia Reed and Alexander each scored four in the quarter while Maiya Reed had two.

 

In the second, the Lady Senators were able to take a double-digit lead thanks to five points from Alexander and 3-pointers by Maiya Reed and Tanner. Farrell and Barr also scored in the quarter, and the Lady Senators led 29-16 at the break. 

 

The third quarter was more of the same for Walters State as they scored 14 more points and led 43-36 heading to the final 10 minutes. Maiya Reed took over in the third quarter for Walters State with eight points while Farrell had four and Tyasia Reed had two.

 

St. Petersburg would not go down without a fight in the fourth quarter as they got the lead down to three late. However, thanks to Farrell's 11 points in the quarter and two big 3-pointers by Tanner, Walters State was able to hang on.

Walters State will be back in action on Sunday as they close things out in Florida against host Pensacola State. Tip is set for 3 p.m. ET.
