Lady Senators ease past Gadsden State at Shelton State Classic

TUSCALOOSA, AL – The Lady Senators held Gadsden State scoreless in the fourth quarter on Friday evening as Walters State cruised to a 79-24 win in their first game of the Shelton State Classic.

 

With the win, Walters State improved to 10-2 on the season and have won their last four contests. 

 

Four players scored in double figures for the Lady Senators with Izarria Alexander leading the way with 18 points on 8-13 shooting. Alexander had three rebounds, four assists and three steals, as well.

 

Along with Alexander, Rose Morrow poured in 15 points on 7-10 shooting and had five rebounds, five assists and three steals. Other players in double figures were Asia Barr with 12 points and Kailyn Farrell with 13 points. Barr had five assists and three steals while Farrell had nine rebounds and three steals. 

 

Other scorers for Walters State were Tyasia Reed with nine, Maiya Reed with eight, Ciara Taylor with two and Juilenne Ongbagnamen with two. 

 

As a team the Lady Senators shot 48.5% from the field and had 22 assists and 38 rebounds. They held Gadsden to just 20% from the field and forced 24 turnovers. 

 

Walters State took a 4-2 lead to start on a Morrow layup and then Barr hit a 3-pointer to break a 4-4 tie. The lead grew to six after a Maiya Reed three and a Barr layup made it 14-5 after one. 

 

In the second, the Lady Senators totaled 25 more points and held Gadsden to 10. Farrell had eight points in the quarter while Alexander had five. Morrow and Tyasia Reed each added four. 

 

Barr hit two more 3-pointers for the Lady Senators in the third while Morrow had five points as the Lady Senators led 58-24 after three. 

 

The fourth was the best of the contest from the Lady Senators as Walters State scored 21 and held Gadsden scoreless for the entire 10 minutes. Alexander had seven points in the final frame while Farrell and Tyasia Reed each had five. Gadsden missed all 13 of their shots.

Walters State will be back in action on Saturday against Shelton State for the final day of the Shelton State Classic. Tip is set for 3 p.m. The Lady Senators defeated Shelton 52-46 in their opening game of the season.
