30-point second quarter leads Walters State to win over Tusculum JV

MORRISTOWN, TN – Walters State outscored Tusculum JV 30-5 in the second quarter on Wednesday night as they cruised to an 82-41 victory.

 

With the win, the Lady Senators moved to 2-1 on the season. 

 

Walters State was led in the game by Tyasia Reed with 17 points, six rebounds and three assists. Along with Reed, Kailyn Farrell added 14 points and six rebounds while Charlotte Carvalho had 11 points. 

 

Other scorers in the game for the Lady Senators were Matty Tanner with nine, Asia Barr with nine, Maiya Reed, Rose Morrow and Aminata Tal with six each and Julienne Ongbagnamen with four. 

 

Morrow and Maiya Reed also distributed the ball well in the game as Morrow had six assists and Reed had four. 

 

Carvalho got the scoring going with a jumper to open up the game before Maiya Reed followed with a 3-pointer to make it 5-0. Carvalho added two more points before Tusculum got on the board. However, Carvalho wasn't finished as she scored on another jumper and it was 9-2. Tusculum cut the lead to 9-6 after that, but Carvalho scored one more time, as did Morrow. Tanner hit a three late in the quarter that made it 16-11 after one. 

 

The second quarter was all Walters State as they scored 30 points to Tusculum's five. Tanner started things off with a 3-pointer, and Tyasia Reed followed with an and-one that made it 22-11. Farrell and Barr both made shots after that before a 3-pointer from Barr pushed the lead to 29-13. 

 

Tanner hit one more 3-pointer before Farrell made a layup and Morrow made a shot to make it 36-13. Tusculum scored following that basket but would not score again as Walters State rallied off 10 straight points to take a 46-16 lead at the half. 

 

The second half proved to be a lot similar to the first as the third quarter was played tightly before the Lady Senators outscored Tusculum 22-11 in the fourth. Tyasia Reed and Farrell led the charge in the second half, as Morrow dished out multiple assists. A made runner in the lane by Morrow late in the fourth ended the night with an 82-41 win.

Walters State will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to take on Dyersburg State in their first conference game of the season. Tip is set for 3 p.m. ET
