Defensive effort pushes Lady Senators past Chattanooga State

MORRISTOWN, TN – No. 22 Walters State allowed 15 points total in the second half Wednesday evening as they took care of Chattanooga State, 61-37. 

 

With the win, Walters State improved to 19-3 on the season and 14-0 in TCCAA play. The Lady Senators have a three-game lead over Cleveland State in the conference standings with four games to play. 

 

"It was a solid defensive effort from us tonight, especially in the second half," Walters State coach Jasmin Coleman said. "I thought Maiya (Reed) did a great job early of driving to the basket. Rose (Morrow) was solid off the bench and Bri (Marshall) nearly had a double-double."

 

Maiya Reed led the way for the Lady Senators in the game with 14 points on 6-10 shooting and dished out seven assists. Along with Reed, Briontanay Marshall had eight points and 10 rebounds off the bench while Rose Morrow had 11 points and five assists. 

 

Other contributors for the Lady Senators were Asia Barr with nine points, Tyasia Reed with eight points and four rebounds, Kailyn Farrell with six points and seven rebounds and Izarria Alexander with five points and six rebounds. 

 

Defensively, the Lady Senators held Chattanooga State to 15-52 from the field and 0-12 from the 3-point line. Walters State forced 17 turnovers. 

 

It was a tight first quarter as the two teams were tied at 10 midway through. However, the Lady Senators reeled off nine of the final 10 points to lead 19-11 after one. Maiya Reed had 12 of the Lady Senators points in the opening quarter, going 5-5 from the field. 

 

In the second, the Lady Senators struggled to score with just eight points. But Chatt State managed only 11, as Walters State led 27-22 at the break.

 

The third quarter was where the game changed as Walters State scored 19 points and held the Lady Tigers to nine, leading 46-31. Tyasia Reed had five points in the quarter while Morrow was 3-4 from the field and had eight points. 

 

The fourth quarter was more of the same on the defensive end as Walters State held Chatt State to six points while they scored 15 more. Barr had six points while Marshall added four and had six rebounds. Chatt State shot 2-12 in the last 10 minutes of the game.

Walters State will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to take on Volunteer State. Tip is set for 3 p.m. ET.
