Four score double figures as Lady Senators top Volunteer State

GALLATIN, TN – No. 22 Walters State scored 25 points in the second quarter on Saturday afternoon against Volunteer State and were off from there as they went on for a 77-43 victory.

 

With the win, Walters State improved to 20-3 overall and 15-0 in TCCAA play. The win locked up the No. 1 seed in the Region 7 Tournament for the Lady Senators and put them one win away from the regular season conference title. 

 

Asia Barr led four in double figures for the Lady Senators with a season-high 17 points. Barr added three assists and two steals. 

 

Along with Barr, Izarria Alexander, Aminata Tal and Kailyn Farrell each scored double figures. Farrell had 15 points on 7-9 shooting and 12 rebounds while Alexander had 14 points, six rebounds and six steals and Tal had 10 points.

 

Other contributors for Walters State were Tyasia Reed with eight points and four rebounds, Rose Morrow with six points and five rebounds, Briontanay Marshall with three points and six rebounds, Maiya Reed with two points, three assists and three steals and Matty Tanner with two points and three assists. 

 

As a team, Walters State shot 50% from the field and were 9-17 from the 3-point line. The Lady Senators grabbed 40 rebounds and had 21 assists. 

 

Defensively, the Lady Senators held Vol State to 33% from the field and forced 27 turnovers. 

 

It was a slow start for Walters State as they led 9-8 after the first quarter. Tal and Barr each had three points to lead the way.

 

In the second quarter, the offense woke up as the Lady Senators outscored Vol State 25-10 to lead 34-18 at the break. Farrell had eight points in the quarter while Barr hit two 3-pointers. The Lady Senators made 11-of-18 shots. 

 

In the third quarter, the Lady Senators added to their lead as they outscored Vol State 18-11 to go up 52-29. Barr had six points in the quarter while Tall and Morrow added four each. 

 

The fourth quarter was more of the same as Walters State scored 25 more points and held Vol State to 14. Alexander had seven points in the final 10 minutes while Tyasia Reed added five.

Walters State will be back in action on Wednesday evening as they travel to Roane State. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
