Lady Senators get road win over Chattanooga State

 

CHATTANOOGA, TN – Their first game of 2023, Walters State came out Wednesday evening on the road against Chattanooga State on a mission.

 

The Lady Senators scored 24 points in the opening quarter and held the Lady Tigers to nine as they broke out to a big lead. Walters State would hold on from there, going on for a 69-60 victory.

 

With the win, Walters State improved to 11-3 on the season and 6-0 in TCCAA play. 

 

Maiya Reed led the way for Walters State in the game with 21 points on 7-11 shooting and was 5-6 from the free throw line. Reed also had four rebounds and two assists.

 

Along with Reed, Izarria Alexander had 16 points while Tyasia Reed had 14 points, nine rebounds and four steals.

 

Other contributors for Walters State were Kailyn Farrell with eight points, five rebounds and three assists, Matty Tanner with six points and eight rebounds, Asia Barr with two points and four assists and Rose Morrow with two points. 

 

As a team, the Lady Senators were 26-67 from the floor and 11-12 from the charity stripe. 

 

Defensively, the Lady Senators held Chattanooga State to a 36% field goal percentage and forced 13 turnovers. 

 

Walters State was on fire to start the game as Maiya Reed hit all four shots she took in the opening quarter to total nine points. Alexander had six points while Tyasia Reed had four. The Lady Senators held Chattanooga State to just four field goals and led 24-9 after one.

 

In the second, Walters State struggled to score with just six points but still led 30-25 at the half. Alexander scored four of Walters State's six points.

 

The offense exploded once again in the third quarter as the Lady Senators scored 25 more points and led by nine going to the fourth quarter at 55-46. Maiya Reed, Farrell and Alexander each had six points in the quarter to lead Walters State. Alexander hit a shot at the buzzer to give the Lady Senators that nine-point lead. 

 

In the fourth, Walters State scored 14 points and held Chattanooga State to 14 as they went on for the victory. Chattanooga State had the lead down to three early in the fourth but, after a four-minute scoring drought by both teams, Tyasia Reed drilled a 3-pointer. Chatt State made two free throws, but Tyasia Reed hit yet another three. 

 

From there, Morrow and Maiya Reed made free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

Walters State will be back in action on Saturday as they host Vol State. Tip is set for 2 p.m.
