Lady Senators put up phenomenal effort in dominating win over Motlow State

MORRISTOWN, TN – The Walters State Lady Senators came to play on both ends of the floor on Wednesday evening.

 

Taking on Motlow State, the Lady Senators held Motlow to two points in the second quarter and scoreless in the fourth quarter as Walters State easily took a 68-23 victory.

 

With the win, Walters State improved to 6-5 on the season and 3-1 in TCCAA play. 

 

"I thought we put up a great effort tonight," Walters State coach Jasmin Coleman said. "We were really strong defensively, and it led to success on the offensive side. I was really pleased with our performance and hope we keep the momentum going this weekend." 

 

Walters State had three score in double figures on Wednesday, with Kyra Perkins leading the way with 21 points. Along with Perkins, Asia Barr had 16 points and Kristyna Boyd had 11 points.

 

Other scorers for Walters State were Briontanay Marshall with nine points, Emmanuella Amaefula with five points, Tianna Rhodes with four points and Janae Charles with two points. 

 

"As a team, we did a good job of scoring consistently," Coleman said. "To have seven players score shows how well we did sharing the ball, as well." 

 

Walters State came out strong to start the game on the offensive side, scoring 18 points to Motlow's 12. Barr knocked in two 3-pointers in the quarter, while Perkins hit one and had five points and Marshall scored four. 

 

In the second, Walters State took the game over as they scored the first 11 points of the quarter and led 30-14 at the break. During the run, Boyd scored four while Barr hit another 3-pointer. 

 

The offense took off in the third quarter with 20 points, holding Motlow to nine in the process to lead 50-23 going to the fourth quarter. Perkins was unstoppable in the third, with 10 points. Boyd added four, as well. 

 

In the fourth, Walters State put forth their best defensive effort as they shut out Motlow State for the final eight minutes. Barr had five points for Walters State, and Perkins and Rhodes each had four points.

Walters State will be back in action on Saturday afternoon, traveling to take on Southwest Tennessee. Tip is set for 3 p.m. ET.
