Strong second quarter leads Walters State past Spartanburg Methodist

SPARTANBURG, SC – Walters State shrugged off a slow start Thursday evening on the road, dominating Spartanburg Methodist the rest of the way for a 70-48 victory. 

The Lady Senators outscored the Pioneers 19-4 in the second quarter to take control.  

With the win, Walters State improves to 2-1. It was the Lady Senators first game since Jan. 30.  

Madison Mccoy led the way for Walters State with 18 points and eight rebounds. Quentarra Mitchell recorded her first double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Blayre Shultz had 16 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.  

As a team, Walters State shot 42.4% from the field and 66.7% from the free throw line while holding Spartanburg Methodist to 28.3% from the field and 25% from the 3-point line.  

Despite the lopsided victory by Walters State, it was the Pioneers who came out quick to start the game, opening up a 14-2 lead with 3:38 to go in the first quarter. Walters State managed to fight their way back into the game with layups from Shultz, Jaida Wiggins and Kiera Hill but trailed 15-10 after one.  

In the second though, it was Walters State who came out firing as Mccoy scored the first eight points of the quarter for Walters State to make it 19-18. Shultz would then hit a layup to give the Lady Senators the lead before Mccoy hit another shot. Walters State would end the half on an 11-0 run, taking a 29-19 lead into the locker room. 

The third quarter was more of the same for the Lady Senators who got the lead to 15 by the end of the quarter. Mccoy had eight more points in the third while Mitchell added five. 

In the fourth, Walters State continued to build their leading, getting it to 22 by the final horn. Shultz had seven in the quarter to lead the way while Mitchell had six. 

UP NEXT:  

Walters State will be back in action again on the road on Saturday, travelling to take on  No. 11 Chattanooga State. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m. 

The Lady Senators will be looking for revenge after falling in their season opener to the Lady Tigers on a last second shot.
