Strong second half leads Lady Senators over St. Petersburg

PENSACOLA, FL – Walters State closed out their time in Florida on Saturday afternoon with a huge victory over host St. Petersburg College, 62-51. 

 

With the win, Walters State improves to 5-3 on the season.

 

The Lady Senators were led in the game by Kiera Hill with 15 points, all in the second half. Along with Hill, Germariona Hollingsworth added 12 points while Rose Morrow had 10.

 

Other scorers in the game for the Lady Senators were Maiya Reed with eight, Ryann Woodley with two, Izarria Alexander with six, Elizabeth Chambers with three, Vertonia Bady with two and Tyasia Reed with two. 

 

It was a strong start for both teams as the offenses were off and rolling in the first quarter. St. Petersburg led 16-14 after one, but Hollingsworth had six points in the quarter while Alexander had four.

 

In the second quarter, Walters State used a strong defensive effort to take a 28-25 lead into the locker room. In the quarter, Maiya Reed had five points, including a big 3-pointer.

 

The third quarter was the deciding factor in the contest as Walters State took over in the final four minutes. Down 35-33, the Lady Senators closed the quarter out on an 11-0 run and had a 44-35 lead. Hill finally got going in the quarter with eight points while Morrow hit two 3-pointers. 

 

The run continued to open up the fourth quarter as the Lady Senators kept surging. A last-minute run by St. Petersburg made the final score closer than it appeared. Hill had seven points in the quarter while Morrow, Reed, Woodley, Alexander and Hollingsworth also scored in the final frame.

Walters State will be back in action on Wednesday, travelling to take on Cleveland State. Tip is set for 5:30 as the Lady Senators look to improve to 5-0 in TCCAA play.
