Lady Senators blow past Volunteer State on Homecoming

Lady Senators blow past Volunteer State on Homecoming

MORRISTOWN, TN – Walters State jumped out early and never looked back on Saturday afternoon, taking down Volunteer State 84-42 on Homecoming.

With the win, the Lady Senators improve to 6-0 in TCCAA play and 7-3 overall.

"We just were able to work on some different things today and play a lot more people," Walters State coach Jasmin Coleman said. "We have a little bit of a break before our next game, so this gives us some film to watch on some of our new stuff and improve on it."

The win marks the final conference game of 2021 for Walters State as they play three non-conference games to close out 2021.

For Coleman, she likes where her team is at right now and how they are continuing to grow.

"We're growing up, for sure," Coleman said. "We're just continuing to learn and improve each and every game and practice. We're going to need to come back ready and prepared after that week off for break."

Walters State was led in the game by Kiera Hill with 18 points. Hill has been a dominant force for Walters State this season, averaging 18 points and 10 rebounds per game.

Along with Hill, Izarria Alexander had 12 points. Alexander scored eight in the first quarter to really get her game off and running.

"Everything starts for her with her defense," Coleman said. "Her sister was the same way when she played here. Z (Alexander) has been working on her shot and getting the ball up, and that is giving her some confidence. She's trying to get back into the swing of things after a little injury, and she's starting to step up."

Freshman center Elizabeth Chambers had 13 points as well in the contest for the Lady Senators. Chambers, standing at 6-2, has improved her game from the beginning of the season, finding herself in the starting lineup the past two games and making the most of it.

"Liz (Chambers) works so hard all the time," Coleman said. "She's never been in a position where we are putting her right now where she can be a top player. She's learning and working everyday in practice to get there. She just needs to get stronger and tougher."

Other scorers included Vertonia Bady with 10 points and Maiya Reed with eight points and Germariona Hollingsworth with 11.

It was a slower start for Walters State out of the gate as the score was 9-5 early before Hollingsworth hit a shot and Alexander knocked down her second 3-pointer of the quarter. Bady scored four and Hill two to end the quarter and it was 19-6 after one.

In the second, Walters State really got things going as they scored the first 10 points. Chambers scored five quick points and Reed hit a three and it was 29-6. The lead got up to 45-12 at the half and Bady and Hill scored the final 10 points of the half.

The second half was more of the same as Chambers scored the first four points and Hill scored the next six. Hill had eight in the third quarter as it was 64-27. In the fourth, Raynn Woodley scored six points while Hollingsworth had six as well.

UP NEXT:

Walters State will be back in action on Tuesday, December 14th, when they host Spartanburg Methodist. Tip is set for 2 p.m.

For Coleman, she just wants to continue to see her team improve during this week and a half of practice time.

"We just have to put in a few more things and build on these next three non-conference games and get better going into Christmas," Coleman said. "We're just going to work on being tougher and staying on the same page."
