Walters State holds off Jackson State for tough road win

JACKSON, TN – Walters State kept their perfect conference record intact on Saturday afternoon, taking down Jackson State on the road 62-54. 

 

With the win, Walters State improves to 10-4 overall and 8-0 in TCCAA play.

 

Kiera Hill led the way for the Lady Senators with 24 points. Hill is now averaging 20.2 points per game, good enough for fifth in the NJCAA.

 

Along with Hill, Germariona Hollingsworth added 17 points. Other scorers for Walters State were Maiya Reed with eight, Izarria Alexander with nine and Ryann Woodley and Akiraona Steverson with two each. 

 

It was a strong first quarter from Hollingsworth and Hill as they scored 14 of the Lady Senators 18 points. Walters State led 18-13 after one. 

 

In the second quarter, Hill added to her point total with eight points while Steverson and Hollingsworth each added a bucket. Walters State led 30-26 at the break. 

 

Walters State kept the Lady Greenjays at bay in the third quarter as they built their lead to 10 heading to the final frame. In the third, Reed and Alexander scored four each while Hollingsworth had seven and Hill two. 

 

Hill closed the door for the Lady Senators in the fourth quarter with eight points while Reed had four, Woodley two and Alexander one.

Walters State will be back in action on Wednesday as they travel to take on Chattanooga State. In their earlier meeting this season with the Lady Tigers, Walters State was victorious 70-49.
