Lady Senators win fourth-straight with victory over Southwest Tennessee

MORRISTOWN, TN – Walters State kept their winning streak alive in dominating fashion on Saturday afternoon with a 71-36 victory over Southwest Tennessee.

With the win, Walters State improves to 14-5 on the season and 12-1 in TCCAA play.

"I thought we came out strong in the second half and were good defensively," Walters State coach Jasmin Coleman said. "It was another game where everyone contributed so that's always good to see, especially with postseason play coming up. We're going to need everyone to contribute."

Kiera Hill led the way for Walters State with 22 points, eight coming in the second quarter and eight coming in the fourth quarter.

"It was good to see Kiera put up that performance, especially after a week off," Coleman said. "She just did what she's been doing, just being physical inside and finishing at the rim."

It was a balanced scoring effort outside of Hill as all 10 players scored. Those scorers were Rose Morrow with eight, Maiya Reed with seven, Ryann Woodley with six, Izarria Alexander with six, Matty Tanner with two, Elizabeth Chambers with two, Tyasia Reed with eight, Akiraona Steverson with two and Gemariona Hollingsworth with eight.

It was a solid defensive effort from Walters State in the first quarter as the Lady Senators held Southwest to just seven points while scoring 11 of their own. Morrow, Maiya Reed, Alexander, Hollingsworth and Hill each made baskets in the quarter.

In the second, the Lady Senators continued to hold the lead and led 33-19 at the break. Hill began to take the game over in the second with four of the Lady Senators nine field goals. Tanner, Chambers, Tyasia Reed and Hollingsworth made the other field goals in the quarter with Morrow and Maiya Reed adding two free throws apiece.

The third quarter was the backbreaker as Walters State held Southwest without a field goal and just three points. Meanwhile, the Lady Senators piled on 16 more points and led 49-22.

The fourth quarter was more of the same as Coleman rotated five players in-and-out every couple of minutes to get everyone playing time. Hill scored eight in the quarter with Woodley and Hollingsworth each adding four.

Up Next:

Walters State has a quick turnaround as they play their final non-conference game of the season against Spartanburg Methodist on the road on Sunday. Tip is set for 3 p.m.

"It'll be a good game to continue to work on things and get better," Coleman said. "They beat us earlier in the season, so it will be a challenge for us. We just need to play our game and continue to improve."
