Lady Senators fall to Spartanburg Methodist on last second shot

SPARTANBURG, SC – Spartanburg Methodist's Tamerah Brown hit a 3-pointer with just one second left in the game on Sunday afternoon as they slipped past Walters State, 74-71.

 

With the loss, Walters State falls to 14-6 on the season.

 

Kiera Hill once again led the way for the Lady Senators with 18 points and eight rebounds. She was a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line. 

 

Along with Hill, Maiya Reed added 12 points and was also 6-6 from the charity stripe. She had six assists as well.

 

Other scorers for Walters State were Gemariona Hollingsworth and Ryann Woodley with nine each, Tyasia Reed with seven, Izarria Alexander with six and Matty Tanner and Rose Morrow with five each. 

 

As a team, Walters State shot 26-70 (37.1%) from the field and were 17-19 (89.5%) from the free throw line. 

 

Alexander led the team in rebounds with nine while Woodley had four assists to go with Maiya Reed's six. 

 

It was a back-and-forth start for both teams as Walter State took some control with five minutes to go, going up 11-6 as Hill made a jump shot. The lead would grow to 17-9 on buckets from Alexander and Hill. However, Spartanburg Methodist ended the quarter on a 13-2 run and led 22-19 after one.

 

In the second quarter, Walters State took the lead back with six minutes left as Woodley made a jump shot to make it 26-24. Later in the quarter, the Lady Senators lead grew to seven as Woodley scored four straight. Once again, Spartanburg Methodist responded, but the Lady Senators led 37-34 at the break.

 

Walters State continued to hold onto their lead in the third quarter as they tried to pull away, only for Spartanburg Methodist to continue to answer. The lead got to nine with a minute left in the quarter, and Walters State led 61-54 after three.

 

Unfortunately for Walters State, Spartanburg Methodist opened the quarter on 6-0 run to cut the lead to one. Morrow stopped the bleeding by converting an and-one, however, Spartanburg Methodist would take their first lead of the half on a 3-pointer with four minutes to go. 

 

The two teams went back-and-forth from there as Maiya Reed hit a layup with two minutes to go to give the Lady Senators a two-point lead at 71-69. Spartanburg Methodist tied the game back up with a minute left before hitting the game winner.

Walters State will be back in action on Wednesday as they travel to take on Roane State. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
