Walters State advances to Region VII Semifinals with 81-31 win over Dyersburg State

DYERSBURG, TN – Walters State played one of their more complete games of the season on Sunday in the Region VII Women's Basketball Quarterfinals, easily dispatching Dyersburg State 81-31. 

 

With the victory, Walters State improved to 17-6 on the season. 

 

On Sunday, the Lady Senators saw five score in double figures with Kiera Hill leading the way with 16 points. Hill added five rebounds as well and was 7-11 from the field.

 

Along with Hill, Gemariona Hollingsworth had 14 points, Rose Morrow had 13, Tyasia Reed had 12 and Matty Tanner had 11. Other scorers for the Lady Senators were Izarria Alexander with nine, Maiya Reed with four and Elizabeth Chambers with two.

 

As a team, Walters State shot 50.7% (34-67) from the field and were 52.4% from the 3-point line. The Lady Senators hit 11 3-pointers in the game with Tanner and Morrow each knocking down three triples. 

 

On the boards, the Lady Senators out-rebounded Dyersburg, 46-29. Hollingsworth led Walters State with eight rebounds while Akiraona Steverson had six. 

 

On the defensive end for Walters State, the Lady Senators held Dyersburg to just 11-50 from the field and 3-19 from 3-point range. 

 

It was all Walters State from the beginning as the Lady Senators broke out to a 26-10 lead after one quarter. Morrow got the Lady Senators going with two 3-pointers and multiple fast break buckets off the bench. Tanner ended the quarter with a bang, drilling a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

 

In the second quarter, Walters State continued to put the pressure on and led 42-19 at the break. Tanner was the sharp shooter in the second quarter as she knocked down two 3-pointers. 

 

The second half was more of the same as Walters State coach Jasmin Coleman tried to get everyone playing time and rest some of her starters. Walters State led 58-25 after three and went on for the 50-point victory.
