Walters State advances to NJCAA Region VII Championship with 55-42 win over Roane State

DYERSBURG, TN – The Walters State women's basketball team is heading to yet another NJCAA Region VII Championship.

 

On Monday night at Dyersburg, Walters State held Roane State to single digits in each of the first three quarters as they cruised to a 55-42 win in the Region VII Semifinals. 

 

With the win, Walters State moved to 18-6 on the season and have now won four straight games.

 

Just one day after being named the TCCAA Player of the Year, Kiera Hill led the way for Walters State with 20 points. Hill was 9-13 from the field and recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds. It was her 13th double-double of the season. 

 

Along with Hill, Rose Morrow continued her impressive tournament run with 10 points. Morrow had 13 points in Sunday's quarterfinal win. 

 

Other scorers in the game were Matty Tanner and Tyasia Reed with six each, Gemariona Hollingsworth with five, Izarria Alexander with four and Maiya Reed and Akiraona Steverson with two each. Maiya Reed made an impact all over the court with five assists and six rebounds while Tanner has now hit five 3-pointers over the two tournament games. 

 

As a team, Walters State shot 41.5% (22-53) from the field while holding Roane State to just 29.8%. Walters State out-rebounded Roane State, 38-34.

 

It was the Lady Senators who opened up the game out in front, leading Roane State 12-9 after the first quarter. The second quarter was more of the same as the Lady Senators held Roane State to nine points and led 23-18 at the break.

 

In the third quarter, the Lady Senators took control, out-scoring Roane State 18-7 and leading 41-25. While Roane State out-scored the Lady Senators in the fourth, it was only by three points as the Lady Senators won by double digits.

Walters State moves on to the NJCAA Region VII Championship game as they will play the winner of Chattanooga State-Cleveland State at 5 p.m. ET on Tuesday. Walters State will be looking for their 17th NJCAA Region VII Championship and 21st TCCAA Title.
