Lady Senators fall in opening round of NJCAA DI Women’s Basketball Tournament

LUBBOCK, TX – No. 22 Walters State saw their season come to an end on Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the NJCAA DI Women's Basketball Tournament, falling to No. 11 Trinity Valley 66-45 at the RIP Griffin Center.

 

With the loss, Walters State closed the season with a 19-7 record. The Lady Senators were TCCAA Regular Season Champions and Region VII Champions. 

 

The Lady Senators were led in the game by Kiera Hill with 15 points and nine rebounds. Along with Hill, Maiya Reed had six points while Rose Morrow, Gemariona Hollingsworth and Elizabeth Chambers each had five points. Other scorers were Izarria Alexander with four, Matty Tanner with three and Tyasia Reed with two. 

 

As a team, the Lady Senators shot just 17-57 (29.8%) from the field and 4-16 (25%) from the 3-point line. Walters State was 7-12 (58.3%) from the free-throw line. 

 

For Trinity Valley, Makiyah McCollister led the way with 15 points. Jasmine Worthy and Kaila Kelley each had 12 points. Trinity Valley had 54 rebounds to Walters State's 39. 

 

McCollister opened the game up with a 3-pointer, however, Hill scored four quick points and Alexander scored to put the Lady Senators up 6-5. Maiya Reed added a free throw to make it 7-5, but Trinity Valley ended the quarter on a 10-2 run to lead 15-9 after one. 

 

Trinity Valley stayed hot in the second quarter and built their lead to 16 before Hollingsworth hit a 3-pointer to make it 27-14. Trinity Valley got their lead back to 16 once more with 3:44 left in the half before Chambers scored five straight and Morrow hit two free throws to end the half. It was 34-22 at the break. 

 

Defense was key in the third quarter for both teams as Walters State continued to fight. A Hill jumper and Maiya Reed layup got the lead down to single digits at 35-26. The two teams battled from there until Morrow hit a 3-pointer to make it 38-31 with 3:10 to go in the quarter. The Lady Senators had two more chances to cut the lead even further but couldn't capitalize as Trinity Valley found their footing and led 42-32 after three.

 

In the fourth, the Lady Senators finally ran out of steam as Trinity Valley made it a 20-point game before cruising to the victory.
