Legendary coaches Bill Carlyle and Dave Kragel honored with naming of Carlyle-Kragel Court

MORRISTOWN, TN – Bill Carlyle and Dave Kragel both came to Walters State thinking they would stay for a few years and then move on to their next coaching adventure.

Little did either know at the time that the court they practiced on each day would eventually have their names on it.

On Saturday, Walters State officially unveiled the naming of Carlyle-Kragel Court, celebrating two coaches who spent almost 50 years at the college mentoring student-athletes.

"Today was not only a special day for our basketball programs, but for Walters State as a whole," Walters State Athletic Director Derek Creech said. "Bill Carlyle and Dave Kragel have been a staple of our college for almost 50 years. It's only right to honor them on the court they spent so much of their lives on. Thank you to both coaches and their families for their dedication to Walters State."

The ceremony was held inbetween the women's and men's games on Saturday. In those games, Kragel's former player and assistant coach Jasmin Coleman coached the Lady Senators while Carlyle's former player and assistant coach Jerry Nichols coached the Senators.

Walters State President Tony Miksa and Walters State President Emeritus Jack Campbell were on hand for the ceremony, as well as many other administrators and former players of both Carlyle and Kragel.

Kragel finished his Hall of Fame career as coach of the Lady Senators in 2020 with a 1,009-281 overall record and plenty of hardware including 15 Eastern Division Championships, 16 Region VII titles and 11 TCCAA conference crowns. Under Kragel, the Lady Senators made the NJCAA national tournament 16 times. Kragel coached the Walters State women's program for 43 years.

On the other side, Carlyle coached the men's basketball program for 46 years before retiring after the 2022-23 season. Carlyle finished his coaching career at Walters State with a record of 945-428, a winning percentage of 68.8%. His overall head coaching record was 1188-498, while his record was 1307-592 including his stints as an assistant coach at ETSU and Oklahoma State. He led the Senators to 12 TCCAA Eastern Division Championships and played in nine Region VII Championships, winning six of them. He made the NJCAA DI Men's Basketball Tournament eight times.
