Walters State remains perfect in conference, sweeps Chattanooga State

Chattanooga, Tenn. — Walters State kept its TCCAA mark spotless Friday night, with a 3-0 victory sweep over Chattanooga State (25-14, 25-13, 25-22).

 

The Lady Senators (13-5, 3-0 TCCAA) are riding a three-game winning streak and haven't dropped a frame in a game since a Sept. 24 in a loss to Catawba Valley Community College. WSCC also boasts a flawless set streak in conference play, currently at 9-0.

 

Walters State again came out of the gate strong, with a 25-14 victory in the opening set with 13 kills at a clip of 26.5 percent. Freshman Olivia Oxendine (Pensacola, Fla.) led the team in kills once again with 12 on the day. She added four digs and two blocks.

 

Game two was more of the same, with the Lady Senators again dominating Chattanooga State (7-6, 0-3) on their own floor, 25-13. Only the final frame was close, with WSCC downing the Lady Tigers 25-22.

 

Sophomore Courtney Dotson (Greeneville, Tenn.) finished the game with eight kills and five service aces. Sophomore Alexis Wakefield (Portland, Tenn.) led WSCC with 19 digs. Freshman Taylor Tigue (Franklin, Tenn.) recorded 19 assists and six digs. Freshman Aubrey Cobb (Church Hill, Tenn.) finished with nine digs and freshman Amanda Singleton (Knoxville, Tenn.) posted eight. Freshmen Jania Hill (Morristown, Tenn.) and Alaysia McGhee (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished with five kills apiece.

 

Chattanooga State's Kayla Ford led both teams with 23 digs in the match. Dakota Rawiszer had 12 assists and 13 digs. Madysun Steele and Brieana Hemphill had nearly identical stat lines, with seven kills and 10 digs each. They both also recorded a block.

 

The Lady Senators are back in action Tuesday with a 6 p.m. first serve at Cleveland State to round out their regular season conference schedule. It's the second game of a six-game road stint. Walters State will return home to 'Z' Buda Gymnasium where they are undefeated this year on Oct. 19 when they host Spartanburg Methodist at 2 p.m.
