No. 13 Walters State grabs wins over Southwest Virginia, USC Lancaster

CEDAR BLUFF, VA – No. 13 Walters State picked up two wins on Saturday afternoon, defeating host Southwest Virginia 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-12) and USC Lancaster 3-1 (24-26, 25-20, 26-24, 25-7).

 

With the wins, Walters State improved to 3-1 on the season. 

 

In their opening match of the day, Walters State was led by Lauren Mims who did it all with 15 digs, eight kills and three aces. Catherine Sweeney had 10 kills and two blocks, while Payton Brown had 13 digs.

 

Other contributors for Walters State were Annah Cate Hyatt with 13 assists and two aces, Olivia Brown with 15 assists, Finley Surber with eight kills and Alyssa Campbell with seven kills and two blocks.

 

The Lady Senators battled close early with Southwest Virginia in the opening set before building a 20-8 lead and holding off a late charge. A kill by Campbell ended the set and gave the Lady Senators the 1-0 lead. 

 

In the second set, the two teams again started close before Walters State went up 17-9. Again Southwest Virginia battled late before a kill by Sweeney won the set and gave Walters State a 2-0 lead.

 

The final set was all Walters State, as they scored the first nine points and never looked back. During the run, Campbell had two kills and Mims had a kill and two aces. The Lady Senators grew the lead to 14-2 from there and cruised to the win. 

 

In the second match of the day, Mims again led the charge with 14 kills and 23 digs. Surber had 11 kills and three blocks, while Veda Barton added 10 kills and three blocks.

 

Other contributors were Rylee Haynie with seven kills and five blocks, Sydney Bjornstad with 24 digs, Campbell with nine kills and three blocks, Hyatt with 20 digs and 16 assists and Olivia Brown with nine digs and 17 assists. 

 

The Lady Senators dropped a close first set, 26-24, to USC Lancaster but then pulled out two close sets, 25-20 and 26-24, to grab the lead. Much like the first match of the day, Walters State dominated the final set of the match, going on for a 25-7 victory.

 

Up Next:

Walters State will be back in action on Thursday, September 5, for their home opener. The Lady Senators will play against Campbellsville University JV at 2 p.m. and Bryan College JV at 6 p.m.
