CHATTANOOGA, TN – No. 14 Walters State finished the first half of TCCAA play undefeated, sweeping Chattanooga State 3-0 (25-21, 26-24, 25-21) on Friday evening.
With the sweep, the Lady Senators improved to 15-3 overall and 4-0 in TCCAA play.
The Lady Senators were led by Lauren Mims with eight kills and 15 digs, while Finley Surber had eight kills and three blocks.
Other contributors for the Lady Senators were Catherine Sweeney with seven kills and three blocks, Veda Barton with seven kills and three blocks, Payton Brown with 17 digs and four aces, Olivia Brown with 14 assists and Emma Miller with 14 assists and eight digs.
The Lady Senators stormed ahead in the opening set 5-2, before the two teams tied at eight. The Lady Senators scored three straight to grab the lead back, but Chattanooga State scored three of their own to tie it back up.
The back-and-forth continued in the set, with Walters State scoring four straight to go ahead 15-11. The advantage grew to 18-12 and 24-20, before a kill by Sweeney closed the set out at 25-21.
In the second set, Chattanooga State led for the majority. However, down 23-20, Walters State scored three straight to tie the set up. Chattanooga State got the next point to force set point, but Walters State held and then got a block by Barton and kill by Barton to win the set at 26-24.
Set three was a battle, with Walters State falling behind 20-18. Back-to-back kills from Surber tied the set back up and an error gave Walters State the lead. The Lady Senators kept the run going with a kill from Barton and block by Surber. Chattanooga State scored one final point to cut it to 23-21, but an error and ace by Sydney Bjornstad ended the set and match.
