CLEVELAND, Tenn. — If there was one slip-up for Walters State as it claimed its third consecutive NJCAA Region 7 title Tuesday night, it's that in their 3-1 victory over Cleveland State, they did drop their lone Region 7 game of the season.
The Lady Senators (14-5, 4-0 Region 7) with a set record of 12-1 as Cleveland State (8-11, 1-2) did manage to take the second set, 25-22. WSCC won the match 25-11, 22-25, 25-17 and 25-14.
Walters State's dominance in the front court was again on display as the team recorded 58 total kills with freshman Alaysia McGhee (Knoxville, Tenn.) leading the way with 14. Freshman Olivia Oxendine (Pensacola, Fla.) finished with 13 and sophomore Courtney Dotson (Greeneville, Tenn.) hammered home 11.
Freshman Amanda Singleton (Knoxville, Tenn.) recorded 29 assists to go with 15 digs, but she wasn't the only Lady Senator to reach double digits in the backcourt. Sophomore Alexis Wakefield (Portland, Tenn.) led WSCC with 19 digs and freshman Jania Hill (Morristown, Tenn.) had 12. Freshman Taylor Tigue (Franklin, Tenn.) added 18 assists.
The Lady Cougars were led by Stephanie Burke's 13 kills. Lydia Martin led both teams with 28 digs. Katlyn Knight recorded 13 digs. Sydney Allen posted 29 assists.
Walters State will return to the floor Friday for two games in the Wallace State Tournament. The face off against the tournament host, Wallace State first at 6 p.m., then square up against Mississippi University for Women at 8 p.m. in Hanceville, Ala.
