Lady Senators drop two Saturday matches to Catawba Valley and Wallace State

Hanceville, Ala. — Walters State dropped its first two games in nearly three weeks as they fell 3-2 to NJCCAA Division II No. 5-ranked Catawba Valley and 3-0 to NJCCAA Division I No. 16 Wallace State Saturday in the Wallace State Invitational tournament at Wallace State Community College.

Friday, the Lady Senators (16-7) swept Wallace Community College-Selma 3-0 and the Mississippi University for Women 3-0. 

The match up with Catawba Valley is the second of three WSCC has on the schedule this season. In their Sept. 24 game at the Tarlton Complex in Hickory, N.C., the Red Hawks won 3-0. Walters State will get a final regular season shot at the Red Hawks on Oct. 29 in 'Z' Buda Gymnasium, where they haven't lost this season.

Saturday, the Lady Senators charged out to an early two-set lead, winning 25-16 and 25-20, but Catawba Valley stormed back in the third, winning 25-13 and tied the match 2-2 after winning 25-14 in the fifth.

The final set was tighter, but the Red Hawks prevailed 15-10.

Freshman Olivia Oxendine (Pensacola, Fla.) led WSCC with 12 kills while adding four blocks. Sophomore Courtney Dotson (Greeneville, Tenn.) had 11 kills to go with 17 digs. Freshman Jania Hill (Morristown, Tenn.) had nine kills and 17 digs.

Freshman Amanda Singleton (Knoxville, Tenn.) recorded 22 assists and 14 digs. Sophomore Alexis Wakefield (Portland, Tenn.) led the team with 21 digs in the game.

Game two wasn't as tight as the host team, Wallace State, downed the Lady Senators 3-0 (25-9, 25-16, 25-16)

Dotson led the team with 10 kills. Wakefield posted 19 digs and Singleton registered nine assists.

The Lady Senators will be back in action on Oct. 17 when they play at Southwest Virginia. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
