Lady Senators upend Southwest Virginia, 3-1

Cedar Bluff, Va. — Walters State bounced back from two consecutive losses to get back in the win column with a 3-1 victory over Southwest Virginia Thursday night (25-9, 25-14, 20-25, 25-12).

The Lady Senators (17-7) charged out the gate in the opening two games, blasting Southwest Virginia (5-12) off the floor. WSCC boasted a 34.3 percent kill percentage in the opening game. While it fell to 23.7 in game two, it was still a significant advantage over the Flying Eagles.

Game three saw Walters State take an uncharacteristic stumble, dropping the frame 25-20. They bounced right back in game four, closing out the match 25-12.

Sophomore Courtney Dotson (Greeneville, Tenn.) did solid work at the net for the Lady Senators, leading the team with 13 kills to go with her 13 digs. Freshmen Alaysia McGhee (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Jania Hill (Morristown, Tenn.) each finished with 10 apiece. Freshman Olivia Oxendine (Pensacola, Fla.) had six.

Freshman Amanda Singleton (Knoxville, Tenn.) offered up 24 assists to go with 15 digs and two service aces. Freshman Taylor Tigue (Franklin, Tenn.) had 14 assists.

In the backcourt, Hill added 12 digs and freshman Aubrey Cobb (Church Hill, Tenn.) posted nine. Sophomore Alexis Wakefield (Portland, Tenn.) led the team in shovel work with 17.

The Lady Senators will be back in action Saturday when they welcome Spartanburg  Methodist to 'Z' Buda Gymnasium at 2 p.m. WSCC is undefeated at home this season.
