
MORRISTOWN, TN – Walters State dropped two games at home on Tuesday afternoon to No. 12 Gaston College, falling 11-7 and 21-14.
With the losses, the Lady Senators fell to 14-13 overall.
GAME ONE: No. 12 Gaston 11, Walters State 7
In game one, Gaston College broke a 7-7 tie with four runs in the seventh and took the win.
At the plate, Alayna Ross, Imari Golden and Brooklyn Copley each homered. Ross and Golden drove in two runs each, as well.
In the circle, Summer Smith got the start and threw four innings. Smith allowed five runs on nine hits and struck out two. Lauren Ruehl replaced Smith in the fifth and threw the next inning, allowing two runs on three hits, before Emma Myatt threw the final two innings. Myatt allowed four runs, two earned, on four hits.
Gaston College scored a run in the first and one in the second to go up 2-0, but Walters State hit back in the bottom of the third. Addison Beech led things off with a double, and Kendal Mason drove her in with an RBI double. Ross was next up, and she gave the Lady Senators a 3-2 lead with a two-run homer. Copley was the next batter, and she went back-to-back with a solo shot to make it 4-2.
However, Gaston scored two in the fourth and three in the fifth to go up 7-4. In the sixth, the Lady Senators cut the lead to one with a two-run homer by Golden and then tied the game on an RBI double by Beech.
Unfortunately, Gaston scored four runs in the seventh and took the win.
GAME TWO: No. 12 Gaston 21, Walters State 14
In game two, the bats were out as the Lady Senators had 16 hits.
Beech, Ross, Copley, Jaelyn McDaniel and Golden each had two hits in the game. Ross homered and drove in four runs, while Copley homered and had two RBIs. Nora Mack, Golden and Allie Seritt drove in two runs each, as well.
In the circle, Ross got the start and threw 0.2 innings, allowing six runs, five earned, on three hits. After Makayla Ramsey threw 0.1 innings, allowing four runs on two hits, Summer Smith threw the next four innings. Smith gave up nine runs, three earned, on 11 hits. Allie Jones pitched the final two innings, allowing two runs on three hits.
Gaston scored six runs in the top of the first, but Walters State got four runs back in the bottom half of the inning. Copley got things going with a two-run homer, and Golden doubled home Mack and Jaelyn McDaniel to make it 6-4.
Gaston scored four in the top of the second to regain control, but Walters State scored two in the bottom half on a McDaniel RBI single and a Mack RBI single. The Lady Senators crept closer in the bottom of the third as Ross slammed a three-run homer to cut the lead to 10-9.
Gaston scored six in the top of the fifth to go up 16-9 and, after an RBI single by Ross in the bottom of the fifth, scored four more in the top of the sixth to make it 20-10. In the bottom of the sixth, Walters State crept closer on an Allie Seritt two-RBI double and a groundout that scored Seritt to make it 20-13.
Gaston scored one final run in the top of the seventh, and despite a run in the bottom of the inning by the Lady Senators on a sacrifice that scored Copley, Walters State fell.
