OXFORD, AL – A phenomenal season came to an end for Walters State softball on Thursday evening, as the Lady Senators fell 11-3 to fifth-seeded Temple.
With the defeat, Walters State ended the season at 46-11. The Lady Senators finished in sixth-place at the World Series for the second straight season. It was the first time in program history the Lady Senators made back-to-back World Series appearances.
The loss closes out the careers for a sophomore class that went 101-15, won the regular season conference title twice, a Region VII Tournament their freshmen year and back-to-back sixth place finishes at the NJCAA World Series.
At the plate for Walters State on Thursday night, Nora Mack and Kendal Mason had two hits each. Mason drove in two runs, as well.
In the circle, Hayley Lawing (17-4) started and threw an inning. Lawing gave up five runs on five hits. Makayla Ramsey replaced Lawing in the second and threw the other four innings. Ramsey gave up six runs, four earned, on seven hits. She struck out two.
Temple set the tone in the game early, scoring two in the first and six in the second. The Lady Senators continued to fight, though. Walters State got a run in the second on an RBI single by Mason and one in the third on an error that scored Mack to make it 8-2.
However, Temple scored three more in the fourth to go up 11-2. Down to their final three outs, Walters State attempted to rally. Imari Golden doubled with two outs in the fifth and scored, as Mason capped off an extremely successful World Series with an RBI double that made it 11-3.
Unfortunately for the Lady Senators, that was the final run as a lineout ended the game in five innings.
