
MORRISTOWN, TN – Walters State fell twice on Wednesday afternoon to No. 18 Chattanooga State, 5-1 and 11-8.
With the losses, the Lady Senators fell to 18-15 overall and 8-4 in TCCAA play.
GAME ONE: No. 18 Chattanooga State 5, Walters State 1
In game one, Emma Myatt threw her third straight complete game and gave up just one earned run. However, errors by the Lady Senators in the seventh inning proved to be the difference.
In her seven innings of work, Myatt gave up nine hits but struck out four.
At the plate, Walters State managed just five hits. Brooklyn Copley had the lone extra-base hit, smacking a double.
Myatt got things going for Walters State in the game, holding Chattanooga State scoreless through the first three innings. In the bottom of the third, the Lady Senators helped Myatt out as Addison Beech singled with two outs, moved to second on a Kendal Mason walk and scored on an RBI single by Alayna Ross to make it 1-0.
However, Chattanooga State tied the game back up in the top of the fourth. That was the score until the seventh when the Lady Senators allowed four runs to score and fell, 5-1.
GAME TWO: No. 18 Chattanooga State 11, Walters State 8
In game two, Ross homered twice and drove in four runs but the Lady Senators again fell victim to errors.
Ross' home runs were her 16th and 17th of the season, giving her a five home run lead in the conference. Along with Ross, Jaelyn McDaniel hit her second home run of the season while Kendal Mason had two hits and two RBIs.
In the circle, Summer Smith got the start and threw 2.2 innings. Smith gave up five unearned runs on five hits while striking out two. Lauren Ruehl pitched the next 1.1 innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on three hits. Allie Jones pitched the final three innings and gave up just one run on four hits while striking out one.
Walters State got the bats going early in game two, as Randi Delong singled home a run in the bottom of the first and Ross crushed a two-run home run into the trees that made it 3-0.
That was the score until the third when Chattanooga State scored seven runs to lead 7-3. The Lady Senators cut it to two in the bottom of the third on another two-run home run by Ross and then to one when the next batter, McDaniel, blasted a solo shot over the fence in center that made it 7-6.
Unfortunately for Walters State, Chattanooga State picked up three more runs in the fourth. Walters State cut the lead to 10-8 in the sixth on a two-RBI single by Mason, but Chattanooga State hit a solo home run in the seventh and went on for the 11-8 win.
