Lady Senators shut out Cleveland State in doubleheader sweep

MORRISTOWN, TN – Four pitchers for Walters State combined to shut out Cleveland State through 12 innings on Tuesday, as the Lady Senators picked up 6-0 and 8-0 wins.

With the sweep, Walters State improved to 20-17 overall and 10-6 in TCCAA play.

GAME ONE: Walters State 6, Cleveland State 0

In game one, Allie Jones and Summer Smith allowed just three hits in the win.

Jones got the start in the circle and threw five innings, allowing two hits and striking out one. Jones has allowed just one earned run in her last 11 innings in the circle. Smith replaced Jones in the sixth and threw the final two innings, allowing just one hit. 

At the plate, Addison Beech went a perfect 3-3 with an RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Jaelyn McDaniel added two RBIs, while Kendal Mason picked up two hits. 

Walters State got on the board in the bottom of the first when Beech singled to lead off, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an error. Alayna Ross, who walked in the inning, scored a few pitches later on a Randi Delong RBI single that made it 2-0.

That was the score until the sixth as Jones and Smith continued to throw up zeros on the scoreboard. In the bottom of the sixth, Walters State finally broke through with four runs. Those runs came on a Beech RBI single, a sacrifice fly from Ross that scored Mason and a two-RBI single by McDaniel that made it 6-0. 

From there, Smith got the final three outs to take the win.

GAME TWO: Walters State 8, Cleveland State 0 (5 innings) 

In game two, Emma Keck and McDaniel had three hits each and the Lady Senators picked up the sweep.

Along with those two, Mason added two more hits, one being a home run, while Delong had two RBIs. Ross added two hits and an RBI, as well. 

In the circle, Emma Myatt got the start and threw 3.2 innings. Myatt allowed just four hits and struck out one. Lauren Ruehl pitched the final 1.1 innings, striking out two and not allowing a hit. 

Following two scoreless innings to start, Walters State got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the third. Delong got things started with a groundout that scored Keck, and McDaniel made it 2-0 with an RBI single. 

In the fourth, Walters State added four more runs to go up 6-0. Those runs came on a sacrifice fly by Ross that scored Mason, a McDaniel RBI single, an Abbie Young RBI single and an Imari Golden RBI single. 

The final two runs of the game came in the bottom of the fifth when Mason led things off with a home run and Delong scored Keck on a sacrifice fly.

Walters State will be back in action on Friday, traveling to Pellissippi State for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 11 am ET.
