Complete performance leads Lady Senators to doubleheader sweep of Roane State

HARRIMAN, TN – Walters State hit well, pitched well and fielded well on Saturday afternoon against Roane State, going on for 5-2 and 11-2 wins over the Lady Raiders. 

With the sweep, the Lady Senators improved to 23-18 overall and 13-7 in TCCAA play. 

GAME ONE: Walters State 5, Roane State 2

In game one, Walters State broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth with two runs and closed things out for the win.

In the circle, Emma Myatt got the start and threw five innings. Myatt allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits and struck out four. Lauren Ruehl replaced Myatt in the sixth and threw the final two innings, allowing no hits and striking out one. 

At the plate, Randi Delong homered while Sarah Short tripled and drove in a run. Jaelyn McDaniel, Kendal Mason and Alayna Ross drove in the other three runs. 

It was a scoreless game until the fourth when the Lady Senators struck for two runs. Delong reached third on an error to start the inning, and McDaniel followed her with an RBI single. Roane State picked up two outs after, but Ross singled home McDaniel with two down to make it 2-0.

Roane State tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fourth and one in the bottom of the fifth, but the Lady Senators took the lead for good in the sixth. Imari Golden led things off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brooklyn Copley and scored on a Mason RBI double. Short was next up, and she drove in Mason with an RBI triple to left field that made it 4-2.

The final run for Walters State came in the seventh as Delong smacked a solo homer over the fence in left to make it 5-2. Ruehl got Roane State 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh, and that was the ballgame. 

GAME TWO: Walters State 11, Roane State 2 (6 Innings)

The Lady Senators scored three runs in the first inning of game two and left no doubt on their way to the run-rule win.

In game two, Olivia Neese went 3-3 at the plate and was a home run shy of the cycle. Brooklyn Copley drove in three runs, as well.

In the circle, Ruehl got the start and threw three innings. Ruehl didn't allow a hit once again and walked just one. Makayla Ramsey replaced Ruehl in the fourth and threw the final three innings, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out two. 

The Lady Senators started strong in the first inning with three runs. McDaniel grounded into a fielder's choice to score the first run, and Ross singled in Emma Keck to make it 2-0. The third run came on an RBI double by Golden that scored McDaniel. 

In the third, Walters State added four more runs as Copley singled in McDaniel, Brenna Hunley grounded into a fielder's choice to score Golden, Mason singled to score Hunley and Neese doubled to score Mason to make it 7-0. 

Roane State got on the board with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Lady Senators answered back in the sixth with four more runs. Those runs came on an error that scored Neese, an error that scored Allie Seritt and a two-RBI single by Copley that made it 11-1. Roane State got a run in the bottom of the sixth, but that was all.
