Griffin, Perkins lead No. 25 Walters State to 72-57 win over Jackson State

JACKSON, TN – Terryauna Griffin and Kyra Perkins combined for 46 points on Saturday against Jackson State, as No. 25 Walters State picked up a 72-57 win. 

With the victory, the Lady Senators improved to 12-4 overall and 9-0 in TCCAA play. 

"Definitely happy to pick up a road win in a tough environment," Walters State coach Jasmin Coleman said. "This young group is trying to battle and mature each day. We are just very blessed to be able to play the game each day.

"We have a tough one on Wednesday and on Saturday. So we will recover and prepare for Columbia and Southwest this week." 

Griffin finished the game with 32 points to lead the way for Walters State, while Perkins added 14. Other scorers for the Lady Senators were Raegan Starks with 10 points, Jahliya McDonald with six points, Nyjah Gibbs with eight points, Anaya Mulholland-Natt with three points and Alexis Hood with one point. 

It was all Lady Senators to start the game, as Perkins scored 10 points in the opening quarter on the way to a 16-8 lead after one. Griffin had four points in the quarter as well, while McDonald had a basket.

In the second, Griffin took over with three 3-pointers in the first four minutes to build a 22-8 advantage. Griffin scored one more time in the quarter, while Perkins had the other three points for Walters State. The Lady Senators led, 30-13. 

The third quarter saw Gibbs score all six of her points, while Griffin knocked in five free throws and Mulholland-Natt and Starks drained triples to give the Lady Senators a 51-36 lead going to the fourth. 

In the fourth, Griffin closed strong with 10 more points. Starks hit two more 3-pointers, while Perkins had four points and Walters State grabbed the 72-57 win.
