23rd-ranked Lady Senators score 32 points in fourth quarter, defeat Volunteer State 73-36

MORRISTOWN, TN – No. 23 Walters State led by three points at halftime against Volunteer State on Saturday but outscored the Pioneers 46-12 in the second half on their way to a 73-36 win. 

With the victory, the Lady Senators improved to 17-4 overall and 14-0 in TCCAA play.

Terryauna Griffin was sensational in the second half for Walters State, finishing with 27 points in the game. Along with Griffin, Jahliya McDonald and Nyjah Gibbs had 11 points each while Kyra Perkins and Raegan Starks each added nine points. Alexis Hood, Ellie Linx and Anaya Mulholland-Natt all had two points apiece. 

As a team, Walters State held Volunteer State to just seven points in the third quarter and five in the fourth quarter. 

Griffin was everywhere for Walters State to start the game, scoring the Lady Senators first nine points to lift them to a 9-4 lead. McDonald got in on the action with four points, and Griffin scored again to make it 15-4 with 4:39 left in the quarter. McDonald and Starks scored to end the quarter, and Walters State led 19-11 after one. 

However, Volunteer State climbed back into it in the second quarter and took a 22-21 lead midway through. McDonald and Gibbs split free throws to give Walters State the lead back, and Mulholland-Natt and Griffin scored in the final two minutes to give the Lady Senators a 27-24 advantage at the break.

In the third quarter, Walters State came out firing and outscored Volunteer State 14-7 to lead 41-31 heading to the fourth. Griffin had five points in the quarter while Gibbs had four.

However, it was the fourth quarter where Walters State shined. The Lady Senators scored a season-high 32 points in the final 10 minutes and held Volunteer State to five points on their way to the win. Griffin had nine points and a handful of assists in the fourth, while Starks had seven, Perkins had six, Gibbs and McDonald and four each and Linx scored two.
