No. 22 Walters State fall 46-44 to Dyersburg State

DYERSBURG, TN – Dyersburg State hit a shot with 0.1 seconds left on Saturday afternoon against No. 22 Walters State, defeating the Lady Senators 46-44.

With the loss, the Lady Senators fell to 18-5 overall and 15-1 in TCCAA play.

Terryauna Griffin led the way for Walters State with 20 points, while Nyjah Gibbs had seven points. Other scorers were Raegan Starks with six, Jahliya McDonald with four, Kyra Perkins with four, Alexis Hood with two and Morgan Williams with one. 

"You're not going to win a lot when you don't take care of the ball and execute," Walters State coach Jasmin Coleman said. "Dyersburg was tougher than us today. They made plays and got stops. We have to toughen up and have more discipline the entire game moving forward." 

The Lady Senators got two threes by Griffin to break out to a 6-2 lead. Dyersburg State tied the game at six, but Griffin hit two free throws and had a putback to get the lead back to 10-6. From there, the Lady Senators got baskets from Perkins, McDonald, Gibbs and a free throw by Starks to lead 17-14 after one. 

The second quarter started slow, but Gibbs converted an and-one to get the Lady Senators lead to 20-14. The lead was 23-18 after a basket by Starks and 25-20 following a bucket by Gibbs. Dyersburg hit a free throw late, but Walters State led 25-21 at the half. 

In the third, Dyersburg scored the first seven points to take a 28-25 lead. Walters State got on the board with a jumper by Hood and Perkins gave them the lead back at 29-28 with a layup. Dyersburg quickly took the lead back and led by three at 34-31. However, Griffin scored five straight and the Lady Senators led 36-34 going to the fourth. 

In the fourth, the Lady Senators got the lead to 41-34 following five more points from Griffin. Unfortunately, Walters State would go cold and Dyersburg scored 10 straight over the next six minutes to go up 44-41 with 30 seconds remaining in the game. Williams was fouled with 22 seconds to go for the Lady Senators and made one free throw, and the Lady Senators got the offensive rebound off a miss and called timeout with 21 seconds to go.

Out of the timeout, the Lady Senators got the ball to Starks and she scored to tie the game at 44 with 17 seconds left. Dyersburg called timeout and drained the clock before throwing up a shot that found the bottom of the net with 0.1 seconds left.
