Lady Senators win TCCAA Regular Season Championship with 56-47 win over Columbia State

COLUMBIA, TN – Walters State claimed their 14th TCCAA Regular Season Title in program history on Saturday, grabbing a 56-47 win over Columbia State.

With the win, the Lady Senators improved to 20-5 overall and 17-1 in TCCAA play. Walters State has now won 14 of 16 TCCAA Regular Season Championships since the conference broke away from divisions. 

"Happy to leave here with a win," Walters State coach Jasmin Coleman said. "I thought we made some plays defensively late in the game that helped us pull away. Raegan Starks got us going off the bench in the first. She has been trying to step up for us. We just need to continue to toughen up heading into the tournament." 

Raegan Starks led the way for Walters State in the game with four 3-pointers and 20 points. Along with Starks, Terryauna Griffin finished with 14 points. Other scorers for the Lady Senators were Kyra Perkins with five points, Morgan Williams with four points, Nyjah Gibbs with four points, Alexis Hood with four points, Ellie Linx with three points and Jahliya McDonald with two points. 

The Lady Senators trailed by one after the opening quarter on Saturday at 18-17 but Starks kept them in it with eight points. Perkins had three points, as well, while Hood, McDonald and Gibbs each had two.

In the second, the Lady Senators scored the first seven points to grab a 24-18 advantage. Columbia scored to break the run, but Starks hit her third three of the game to make it 27-20. The Lady Senators would lead the rest of the quarter and went to the locker room up 31-26. Starks had seven more points in the quarter, while Griffin hit a three. 

In the third, the Lady Senators continued to lead and went up 44-33 after free throws by Hood and a Griffin basket. Columbia cut it to four late in the quarter, but Linx hit a huge three with 15 seconds to go and it was 49-43 heading to the fourth. Griffin had 11 points in the quarter to lead the way.

In the fourth, Starks hit her fourth three of the game while Williams scored four points and the Lady Senators held on for the win.
