
MORRISTOWN, TN – Walters State outscored the University of the Cumberlands JV 46-23 in the second half on Monday evening, going on for an 82-42 victory.
With the win, the Lady Senators improved to 6-2 overall and have won six straight contests.
"We can't come out as slow as we did defensively but proud of the way we turned it around in the second half," Walters State coach Jasmin Coleman said. "We are just blessed to be able to play the game each day and are working to get better every step of the way."
Kyra Perkins was dominant for Walters State, leading the way with 35 points. Jahliya McDonald had the best game of her young Walters State career, as well, with 18 points while Morgan Williams finished with 12 points.
Other scores for Walters State were Nyjah Gibbs with five points, Terryauna Griffin with three points, Anaya Mulholland-Natt with three points, Alexis Hood with two points, Raegan Starks with two points and Ellie Linx with two points.
The Lady Senators started slow in the game, leading 15-9 after the opening 10 minutes. McDonald and Williams had four points each, while Gibbs scored three.
In the second quarter, Walters State found a groove offensively with 21 points and led 36-19 at the break. Perkins drilled back-to-back three's in the final two minutes of the half and had 12 points in the quarter. Williams also hit a three and had five points.
The third quarter saw Walters State put up a great defensive effort, holding the University of the Cumberlands JV to nine points. Walters State had 17 points and led 53-28 going to the fourth.
In the final 10 minutes, Perkins was unstoppable. Perkins made five shots and five free throws, finishing the final 10 minutes with 16 of Walters State's 29 points. When Perkins wasn't scoring, it was McDonald finishing at the hoop, as she also made five shots and had 10 points in the quarter.
