Game Notes: 25th-ranked Lady Senators host second-place Columbia State, travel to Southwest Tennessee

MORRISTOWN, TN – No. 25 Walters State will look to remain undefeated in conference play this week, hosting Columbia State on Wednesday before visiting Southwest Tennessee on Saturday. 

The Lady Senators enter the week at 12-4 overall and 9-0 in TCCAA play following wins over Motlow State (81-33) and Jackson State (74-57) last week.

Walters State defeated Southwest Tennessee earlier this season, 77-26. This will be the first contest this season against Columbia State.

Tip for Wednesday's game at home is set for 5 pm ET. Saturday's game at Southwest will begin at 3 pm ET.

Last Week:

Walters State

The Lady Senators kept their undefeated TCCAA record intact with two wins last week.

In the 81-33 win over Motlow State, Terryauna Griffin led the way with 24 points and eight steals, while Nyjah Gibbs had 15 points and 14 rebounds. Other contributors were Morgan Williams with 13 points and four steals and Raegan Starks with 10 points and six rebounds. 

In the 74-57 win over Jackson State, Griffin was unstoppable with 32 points, while Starks had a double double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Kyra Perkins also had 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists. 

Columbia State

Columbia enters Wednesday following a 1-1 week last week. The Lady Chargers lost 73-64 to Southwest Tennessee but bounced back with a 63-61 win over Chattanooga State.

Against Southwest, Ansley Burleson led the way with 19 points and eight rebounds while Lily Melton and Braley Burleson each scored 16 points. Columbia shot just 38% from the field but forced 20 turnovers. 

In the win over Chattanooga, Jacie Scott came off the bench and scored 16 points and dished out five assists to lead the way. Braley Burleson also finished in double figures with 14 points, as did Melton with 12 points and Ansley Burleson with 11 points. 

Southwest Tennessee 

Southwest Tennessee went a perfect 3-0, with wins over Columbia State (73-64) and Pellissippi State (77-71) last week and a win over Cleveland State (58-41) on Monday. 

Against Columbia, Jaliya Zackery had 20 points and pulled in 16 rebounds while Wynter Beck finished with 24 points and five rebounds. Southwest had 47 rebounds and forced 16 turnovers in the win.

In the win over Pellissippi, Zackery again was on fire with 23 points and 20 rebounds while Jamiyah Jones was 9-12 from the field and scored 29 points. Southwest shot 56% from the field and pulled in 40 rebounds. 

Zackery recorded yet another double-double in the win over Cleveland State, finishing with 16 points and 12 rebounds while Jones threw in 25 points and hit seven 3-pointers. The Lady Saluqis held Cleveland to just 36% from the field and 1-11 from 3-point range. 

 

Players to Watch:

Walters State

Terryauna Griffin (Guard): Griffin has been a machine for Walters State this season, especially in conference play. Griffin averages 21.4 points per game in TCCAA play and is shooting 59.7% from the field in those games. Griffin's recorded 67 steals and has made 109 shots on the season. 

Kyra Perkins (Forward): The lone sophomore for the Lady Senators, Perkins has scored double digits in all but one game this season. Perkins averages 16.6 points per game and 5.2 rebounds. She's also recorded 44 steals and 16 blocks on the season.

Columbia State

Ansley Burleson (Guard): Burleson averages 19 points per game, first in the conference, to go along with seven rebounds. She's knocked in 38 3-pointers on the year and has 14 blocks and 35 steals. 

Lily Melton (Guard): Melton averages 15 points per game and seven rebounds for Columbia. She's pulled in 102 rebounds on the season and shot 35% from 3-point range. 

Southwest Tennessee

Jaliyah Zackery (Forward): Zackery averages 16.7 points and 10.7 rebounds per game and shoots 57.3% from the field. She's second in the conference in offensive rebounds with 64 and third in total rebounds with 160. Zackery has recorded a double double in her last seven games. 

Jamiyah Jones (Wing): Jones averages 13.6 points per game and has recorded 40 steals on the season. Over her last two games, Jones has scored 54 points.
