16th-seeded Lady Senators open NJCAA DI Tournament on Tuesday against 17th-seeded Kilgore College

CASPER, WY – 16th-seeded Walters State open up the NJCAA DI Women's Basketball Tournament on Tuesday afternoon at 12 pm ET against 17th-seeded Kilgore College at the Ford Wyoming Center. 

It's the 20th time in program history that the Lady Senators have qualified for the National Tournament and their 12th appearance since 2012. 

The Lady Senators enter the contest with a 25-5 record and are coming off a TCCAA/Region 7 Championship.

ABOUT KILGORE

Kilgore enters Tuesday's games with a record of 23-9. The Lady Rangers qualified for the National Tournament after beating Tyler Junior College, 67-58, in the Region 14 Championship. 

This will be the Lady Rangers first trip to the National Tournament since 1993. 

Kilgore is coached by Stephanie Williams, in her third year coaching the Lady Rangers. 

As a team, Kilgore ranks 21st in the country in points per game and ninth in the country in field goal percentage at 45.2%. Defensively, Kilgore allow 59.5 points per game and teams shoot 35.5% from the field against them. 

LAST TIME OUT

Walters State 

The Lady Senators are coming off a 3-0 run through the TCCAA/Region 7 Tournament as the top seed. 

In the quarterfinals, Walters State picked up a 67-51 win over Pellissippi State. Terryauna Griffin led the way with 18 points and six rebounds, while Kyra Perkins had 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Raegan Starks added 12 points and six rebounds, as well.

Taking on Roane State in the semifinals, the Lady Senators allowed just five points from Roane State in the fourth quarter and took a 63-46 win. Perkins led the way in the game with 19 points and nine rebounds, and Nyjah Gibbs had 12 points and eight rebounds. Alexis Hood had eight points and seven rebounds, as well. 

In the championship, the Lady Senators allowed two points from Chattanooga State in the opening quarter and held on for a 58-49 victory to claim their 20th Region 7 Championship. Griffin and Perkins each scored 17 points in the game, while Perkins added 12 rebounds. Gibbs had 10 points and six rebounds, while Starks had 11 points and five rebounds. 

Perkins was named the Region 7 Tournament MVP for her three-game stretch. 

Kilgore College

For Kilgore, they opened up the Region 14 Tournament with a 62-50 win over Panola College. Nakiyah Allen scored 17 points and pulled in nine rebounds for Kilgore to lead the charge, and Jarahle Daniels added 11 points. 

In the semifinals, the Lady Rangers upset No. 15 Trinity Valley 79-73. Daniels had 20 points and six rebounds for Kilgore, while Allen had 15 and seven. The Lady Rangers scored 27 points in the final quarter. 

The championship game was one Kilgore led from the jump on their way to a 67-58 victory. Madison Bob and Allen each scored 12 points and Daniels added 10 points and nine rebounds. Off the bench, Anyla Herbert finished with 16 points and pulled in six rebounds. 

Allen was named the Region 14 Tournament MVP. 

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Walters State 

Terryauna Griffin (G): The TCCAA Freshman and Co-Offensive Player of the Year, Griffin averaged 17.3 points per game and 4.6 rebounds per game. Griffin made 50 3-pointers on the season and grabbed 89 steals. Griffin scored 30+ points in three games this season and 20+ points in 11 games. 

Kyra Perkins (F): Perkins was named All-TCCAA First Team after averaging 15.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Perkins had 62 steals and 23 blocks to go along with 474 points. Perkins scored 20+ points in eight games this season, including a 35-point game against University of Cumberlands JV.

Kilgore College

Nakiyah Allen (F): Allen averaged 15.6 points per game on the season, to go with 6.6 rebounds. Allen shot 59.8% from the field and collected 111 offensive rebounds. Allen has scored 20+ points in eight games this season, including a 32-point showing against Temple College. Allen has had eight games with 10+ rebounds, as well. 

Jarahle Daniels (G): Daniels is second on the team in points per game with 11.2, to go with four rebounds. Daniels has recorded 80 steals and made 64 3-pointers. Daniels' season-high came against Collin County Community College when she scored 22 points and knocked in five 3-pointers.
